What is Java?

Java is a class-based object-oriented programming language that was developed in 1995 by Sun Microsystems and later bought by Oracle. Java was designed as a general language capable of programming software for commercial use. It is based on several previous languages such as Objective C, C++, and C#. Java can be used on most major operating systems, including Windows, Apple, and Linux distributions. There is also a Java virtual machine, which allows programmers and developers to work on different operating systems within a single platform.

What does a Java developer do?

A Java Developer is a software professional who specializes in designing, developing, and maintaining applications using the Java programming language. They often work on web, mobile, or enterprise applications, collaborating with other programmers, designers, and stakeholders to deliver functional software solutions. Their responsibilities include writing clean and efficient code, debugging issues, and ensuring applications are secure and scalable. Java Developers are also involved in testing, deploying, and updating software as technology and requirements evolve.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Java developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Java Developer, you need strong proficiency in Java programming, object-oriented design, and a solid understanding of software development principles, typically supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with development frameworks like Spring or Hibernate, version control systems such as Git, and relevant certifications (e.g., Oracle Certified Java Programmer) is highly beneficial. Analytical thinking, problem-solving, and effective communication are important soft skills that distinguish top candidates in collaborative environments. These skills and qualifications are vital for building robust, efficient applications and contributing effectively to development teams.

How does a Java developer typically collaborate with other teams during a software project?

Java developers frequently work alongside front-end developers, QA specialists, and project managers to ensure smooth delivery of software projects. They participate in code reviews, daily stand-ups, and sprint planning meetings, sharing progress and addressing technical challenges collaboratively. Effective communication and coordination with other departments, such as DevOps for deployment or UX/UI teams for interface integration, are essential for delivering high-quality applications. This collaborative environment helps Java developers expand their technical knowledge and build strong professional relationships.

Full Stack Development Engineer

PDF Solutions

Vancouver, BC

Full-time

Re-posted 5 days ago

Job description

Overview

PDF Solutions is redefining the way the semiconductor industry approaches data, analytics, and experience design. As part of our journey, we’re building Next gen platform — a modern, human-centered analytics platform. We believe design systems aren’t just about consistency — they’re about scalability, collaboration, and performance.

Role Summary

This Full Stack Developer owns the ongoing development and maintenance of the Sapience® Manufacturing Hub enterprise (SMHe) product — a cloud-native platform that unifies manufacturing, shop-floor, and process data into enterprise business systems. They will be responsible for building and maintaining SMHe's own back-end services in Java and Spring Boot (microservices, REST APIs, data access against Oracle and Cassandra, Kafka-based messaging), the customer-facing SMHe web UI, the security and IAM layer, and observability — then shipping it all on Kubernetes via Helm across cloud, on-premises, and air-gapped environments. The developer delivers the platform features customers depend on, such as custom monitoring dashboards and end-to-end certificate management.

Equally important is keeping the product healthy over its lifecycle: fixing defects, refactoring, raising test coverage, hardening security, and guaranteeing upgrade safety and backup/restore across releases. The role calls for solid grasp of the platform's architecture — high-availability and disaster-recovery topologies, RBAC, and PKI/TLS — and proven agentic development skills, meaning fluency with AI coding agents to accelerate and improve delivery, backed by concrete evidence (repos, PRs, before/after metrics). Familiarity with Apache Camel and the Karavan visual designer is a plus, but it is supporting context rather than the core of the role.

Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain SMHe's back-end services and microservices in Java and Spring Boot — REST APIs, business logic, scheduled jobs, and service-to-service integration.
  • Build full-stack product features end to end, spanning back-end services and the SMHe web UI, including customer-facing monitoring dashboards (Grafana), panel thresholds, and alerting.
  • Enable logging and auditing within the product, internally and through integration with entrerprise solutions such as splunk or Dynatrace. Use and management of Elastic/Opensearch to gather and analyze data.
  • Implement persistence and data access against Oracle (RAC) and Cassandra using Spring Data / JPA and appropriate drivers, ensuring data integrity, migrations, and upgrade-safe schemas.
  • Integrate Kafka-based messaging through Spring (producers, consumers, serialization, and error handling) for event-driven product capabilities.
  • Maintain product quality across releases: triage and fix defects, refactor, raise unit and integration test coverage, perform code reviews, and manage technical debt.
  • Build security into the the product: Spring Security / OAuth2 / OIDC / JWT integration with SMHe IAM (Keycloak), fine-grained RBAC, and end-to-end TLS/PKI — corporate-CA certificates, Java trust stores, Kubernetes TLS secrets, NGINX ingress, mutual TLS, and certificate rotation/revocation (CRL/OCSP).
  • Code with security in mind: develop and review code for best practices, respond swiftly to change or update code, libraries and dependencies to address CVEs.
  • Guarantee persistence, upgrade safety, and backup/restore for customer-managed artifacts (dashboards, thresholds, alerts, certificates) across pod restarts and version upgrades.
  • Containerize and ship services with Docker, Helm, and Kubernetes; instrument with Micrometer / Spring Boot Actuator to expose Prometheus metrics and Grafana dashboards; support cloud, on-prem, and air-gapped builds.
  • Manage source control in Git and contribute to CI/CD pipelines: branch, build, deploy, roll back, and version product releases.
  • Demonstrate agentic development skills by using AI coding agents to implement, refactor, test, and document features, with evidence of measurable productivity and quality gains.
  • Build agentic and automated capabilities into the product where they add value — self-service workflows and automated monitoring, alerting, and remediation.
  • Author developer and operator documentation, and collaborate with support teams and customer admins to reproduce and resolve product- and platform-level issues.

Qualifications

Must-Have Skills & Experience
