The Test Automation Engineer (QA) supports the quality assurance and software testing efforts for Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) healthcare applications and digital services. This role is responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining automated test frameworks while ensuring software solutions meet functional, performance, security, and accessibility requirements.


Working as part of an Agile DevSecOps team, the Test Automation Engineer collaborates closely with software developers, product owners, business analysts, UX designers, and government stakeholders to deliver high-quality applications that improve healthcare services and experiences for Veterans. The ideal candidate is passionate about software quality, automation, continuous improvement, and delivering reliable solutions in a fast-paced federal environment.


This position is contingent upon contract award supporting the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). Candidates may be considered for this opportunity as contract staffing needs are finalized.


Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, execute, and maintain automated test scripts for web applications, APIs, and backend services.
  • Build and enhance automated testing frameworks to improve software quality and testing efficiency.
  • Collaborate with developers and product teams to define acceptance criteria and testing strategies throughout the software development lifecycle.
  • Execute functional, regression, integration, smoke, end-to-end, and user acceptance testing.
  • Develop and maintain automated API testing using RESTful services.
  • Participate in Agile ceremonies including sprint planning, backlog refinement, daily stand-ups, sprint reviews, and retrospectives.
  • Integrate automated testing into CI/CD pipelines to support continuous integration and continuous delivery.
  • Identify, document, and track software defects using defect management tools.
  • Perform root cause analysis on software defects and work closely with development teams to validate fixes.
  • Validate application performance, usability, accessibility, and cross-browser compatibility.
  • Support security testing activities and collaborate with cybersecurity teams to ensure secure software delivery.
  • Develop and maintain test plans, test cases, test data, and testing documentation.
  • Monitor test execution metrics and provide regular status reporting to project leadership.
  • Promote best practices in quality engineering, automation, and continuous improvement.

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Software Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
  • 3+ years of experience in software quality assurance and automated testing.
