Java was designed as a general language capable of programming software for commercial use. It is based on several previous languages such as Objective C, C++, and C#. Java can be used on most major operating systems, including Windows, Apple, and Linux distributions. There is also a Java virtual machine, which allows programmers and developers to work on different operating systems within a single platform.

What does a Java developer do?

A Java Developer is a software professional who specializes in designing, developing, and maintaining applications using the Java programming language. They often work on web, mobile, or enterprise applications, collaborating with other programmers, designers, and stakeholders to deliver functional software solutions. Their responsibilities include writing clean and efficient code, debugging issues, and ensuring applications are secure and scalable. Java Developers are also involved in testing, deploying, and updating software as technology and requirements evolve.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Java developer, and why are they important?

Join the PingFederate Software team as a Senior Staff Engineer, where you will architect the next generation of proactive, automated security and scaling frameworks for a platform that protects millions of global identities.

We are entering an era where the velocity of emerging threats-accelerated by new AI models-requires a paradigm shift from reactive patch management to intelligent, self-healing software pipelines. In this role, you will lead the charge in defining how our core enterprise stack anticipates vulnerabilities, automates dependency remediation, and scales robustly. Whether your background is in bleeding-edge security automation or engineering world-class, high-scale enterprise systems, you will provide the technical vision to future-proof our platform.

If you're a passionate developer who thrives in a fast-moving, agile environment - this role is for you. We're looking for someone with strong communication skills, the ability to translate requirements and designs into functional Java code, and a sharp focus on security, quality, and performance.

Meet Our Team

We are a friendly, inclusive team that brings together seasoned experts and engineers early in their career journey. We value collective ownership of our codebase, active mentorship, and efficient processes that prevent burnout. It's an environment where junior engineers are empowered to grow, and senior leaders have the space to guide the technical vision and lift the whole team.

Job Functions
  • Architect Next-Generation Defenses: Design and implement cutting-edge automated guardrails, continuous patching architecture, and intelligent dependency management to neutralize software vulnerabilities before they can be exploited.
  • Technical Strategy & Roadmap: Partner with Product Management and Security leadership to define a 3-year technical roadmap that safeguards enterprise identities against traditional and emerging AI-agent threat vectors.
  • Drive Engineering Excellence: Establish the architectural patterns, security standards, and automation frameworks utilized across distributed agile engineering teams.
  • High-Impact Mentorship: Sponsor and grow Senior and Staff engineers, fostering an organizational culture of "shift-left" security and robust system design.
  • Global Collaboration: Collaborate with team members locally in Vancouver, BC, and worldwide to align engineering efforts across geographic regions.
  • System Quality: Work alongside Software Quality Engineers to ensure comprehensive automated unit and integration testing frameworks are built directly into the new architecture.
Essential Qualifications
  • At least 10+ years of software engineering experience, with a proven track record of operating as a principal or senior staff architect for enterprise-grade, large-scale systems.
  • Expert-level mastery of Java and deep familiarity with the enterprise Java ecosystem, open-source libraries, and performance tuning at scale.
  • Automation Mindset: Proven experience architecting automated CI/CD guardrails, automated dependency workflows, or self-healing infrastructure.
  • Web Fundamentals: Solid understanding of HTTP, TLS, and core web application constraints.
  • Exceptional communication and systems-thinking skills, with a history of driving technical alignment across multiple distributed engineering teams.
Desired Qualifications
  • Proactive AI Security Leadership: Deep passion for or experience with evolving AI models and a strong understanding of how to protect software products from threats arising from automated AI exploits.
  • Identity Protocol Expertise: Strong knowledge of identity management technologies and protocols (e.g., SAML, OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect, certificate management, cryptography).
  • Modern Tooling & DevSecOps: Experience with DevOps technologies such as Docker, Kubernetes, Helm, Git, Jenkins, Maven, and developer tools like ClaudeCode.
  • Framework Experience: Experience with core enterprise Java web libraries such as Spring and Jackson, as well as relational databases (JDBC, SQL).
