What is a Java software engineer contract?

A Java Software Engineer Contract is a temporary or fixed-term role where a software engineer is hired to develop, test, and maintain software applications using the Java programming language. Contractors typically work on specific projects or for a set period, rather than as permanent employees. These roles often require expertise in Java frameworks, object-oriented programming, and collaboration with other developers or teams. Contract positions can offer flexibility, competitive pay, and opportunities to work on diverse projects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Java software engineer contractor?

To thrive as a Java Software Engineer Contractor, you need strong proficiency in Java programming, experience with software development lifecycles, and typically a bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with tools such as Spring Framework, Git, Maven, and cloud platforms, as well as knowledge of unit testing frameworks, is highly valued. Excellent problem-solving abilities, adaptability, and clear communication help you stand out, especially when collaborating remotely or integrating with diverse teams. These skills and qualities are crucial for delivering reliable, scalable solutions on time and ensuring smooth coordination in dynamic project environments.

What are some common challenges faced by Java software engineers on contract assignments, and how can they be managed?

Contract Java Software Engineers often face challenges such as quickly adapting to new codebases, understanding project requirements with limited onboarding time, and integrating smoothly with established teams. To manage these challenges, it's important to proactively communicate with team members, ask clarifying questions early, and make use of available documentation. Contract roles also require strong time management and self-motivation, as deliverables and expectations may be clearly defined but support can be less hands-on compared to permanent positions.

The world of work as we know it is changing and we're looking for Trailblazers who are passionate about bettering business and the world through AI, driving innovation, and keeping Salesforce's core values at the heart of it all.

About the Team

The Event Technology team builds and operates the enterprise-grade technology stack powering Salesforce's global brand experiences—from flagship events like Dreamforce to digital content marketing initiatives. We develop industry-leading platforms and solutions that seamlessly connect audiences with relevant content across in-person, digital, and on-demand channels. Our mission is to enable customers and prospects to discover, engage with, and learn from Salesforce content in ways that accelerate product adoption and drive measurable business outcomes.

About the Role

As a Senior Software Engineer in Event Technology, you will architect and build next-generation event attendee platforms aligned to our Future State Architecture, delivering exceptional experiences across the entire technology stack. Your work will directly impact millions of users across Salesforce's flagship events and digital experiences. The ideal candidate is a true full-stack engineer with strong backend API development skills and robust frontend capabilities, equally comfortable designing resilient distributed systems as crafting intuitive user interfaces. AI capabilities are central to our product roadmap, reflecting our commitment to leading innovation in marketing technology.

What You'll Be Doing
  • Use AI-powered development tools and automation to accelerate feature delivery, improve code quality, and rapidly prototype solutions
  • Build performant frontend experiences using TypeScript and React, with attention to component architecture, accessibility, and cross-browser compatibility
  • Design and implement scalable backend APIs and services on cloud-native architectures, ensuring high availability and reliability for millions of event attendees
  • Design and develop micro frontend components with framework-agnostic deployment across multiple platforms and applications
  • Architect and optimize end-to-end data flows across the full stack, from database design through API contracts to frontend state management and UI rendering
  • Own the technical quality of attendee-facing platforms, partnering closely with designers and product managers on production-ready experiences
  • Build and maintain component libraries and backend service modules aligned to design and architectural standards
  • Optimize application performance through code splitting, caching, database query optimization, and API efficiency improvements
  • Drive technical excellence in code quality, performance, security, and system reliability, contributing to all phases of the SDLC in a Hybrid Engineering model
  • Mentor and inspire team members through code reviews, architectural guidance, and dedicated learning sessions
What We're Looking ForRequired Qualifications
  • 7+ years of professional software development experience with demonstrated full-stack capabilities in production environments
  • Proven experience leveraging AI-powered development tools (Claude, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, etc.) to accelerate delivery and improve code quality
  • Expertise in TypeScript, React, and Next.js with modern JavaScript and responsive web design
  • Development expertise including API design (RESTful and GraphQL), microservices architecture, and distributed systems
  • Experience with AWS services (Lambda, DynamoDB, AppSync, API Gateway) and cloud infrastructure
  • Experience building component libraries, design systems, and micro frontend architectures
  • Strong understanding of web performance optimization and security best practices, with experience in CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, and monitoring tools (Splunk, New Relic, CloudWatch)
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor engineers, drive architectural decisions, and take ownership of complex projects under pressure, with strong cross-functional communication skills
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with server-less architectures and event-driven systems
  • Experience with real-time technologies (WebSockets, Server-Sent Events, GraphQL subscriptions)
  • Familiarity with CDN optimization and edge computing (Akamai, CloudFront, Lambda@Edge)
  • Experience with A/B testing frameworks and feature flagging systems
  • Experience leading technical initiatives across multiple teams
  • Track record of driving platform modernization or technical migrations
