What is a Java production support role?

A Java Production Support role involves monitoring, maintaining, and troubleshooting Java-based applications in a live production environment. Professionals in this role address incidents, resolve bugs, and ensure the uptime and performance of applications used by customers or internal teams. They may also work closely with development and operations teams to implement fixes, deploy updates, and optimize system performance. Remote Java Production Support specialists use tools like ticketing systems, monitoring dashboards, and remote access software to investigate and solve issues efficiently.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Java production support engineer working remotely?

To thrive as a Java Production Support Engineer working remotely, you need a solid understanding of Java programming, troubleshooting techniques, and experience with enterprise application support, typically backed by a degree in computer science or related field. Familiarity with tools like SQL databases, application servers (e.g., Tomcat, WebLogic), ticketing systems (such as Jira or ServiceNow), and monitoring solutions is essential. Strong problem-solving abilities, clear communication, and the capacity to work independently make someone stand out in this position. These skills ensure timely resolution of production issues, minimize system downtime, and support seamless business operations across distributed teams.

What are the typical challenges faced by a Java production support engineer working remotely, and how can they be addressed?

Remote Java Production Support engineers often face challenges such as troubleshooting issues without physical access to servers, coordinating with cross-functional teams across time zones, and ensuring clear communication during incident resolution. To address these, it's important to leverage remote access tools, maintain detailed documentation, and use collaboration platforms for real-time updates. Proactively setting up monitoring and alerting systems can also help in quickly identifying and resolving issues, ensuring minimal downtime for critical applications.

Job description

About the role

We are looking for a Senior Full Stack Software Engineer to join our Patching team, the team responsible for how NinjaOne discovers, packages, and deploys OS and third-party software patches across every endpoint we manage. This role is primarily backend-focused Java/Kotlin, with working proficiency in React for the front-end pieces of the patching experience. You'll work closely with the AI workflow, server, and platform teams, as well as product designers and product owners, to extend NinjaOne's patch management capabilities at scale.

Location โ€” We are flexible on remote working from home, if you are located in the USA and reside in one of the following states: CA, CO, CT, FL, GA, *IL, KS, ME, MA, NJ, NC, NY, OR, TN, TX, VA, and WA. We have physical offices in Austin, TX and Tampa, FL, if you prefer a hybrid option.

What You'll Be Doing

  • Extend, and maintain patch and software definitions across supported OS platforms and third-party applications.
  • Java and Kotlin backend development to expose patch management platform functions for extensibility.
  • Build and maintain React-based UI components for the patching workflows and dashboards customers rely on.
  • Collaborate with the AI workflow, server, and platform teams to achieve the Patching team's mission of reliable, scalable patch delivery.
  • Participate in architecture and design reviews to build high-quality, scalable, API-first software that can reliably patch endpoints at scale.
  • Troubleshoot production issues across the technical stack using logs, metrics, and traces โ€” including patch deployment failures and edge cases across diverse endpoint environments.
  • Participate in code reviews, document processes thoroughly, and lead cross-team initiatives.
  • Other duties as needed.

About You

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Technology, or equivalent work experience.
  • 10+ years of experience in Java software development for product applications, or equivalent, with solid expertise in Kotlin. Python experience is a plus but not required.
  • 2+ years of experience with React for front-end development; comfort building UI components is expected, but this is not a design-system-owner role.
  • 4+ years of experience working with highly scalable software systems.
  • Experience leveraging AI tooling to accelerate software development.
  • Working knowledge of a breadth of OOP design principles; expertise in scaling data structures and object-oriented design.
  • Knowledge of API best practices and REST service development using frameworks like Jersey or Spring.
  • Relational database design and development experience.
  • Experience with both client- and server-side development for responsive messaging.
  • Caching systems expertise
  • Expert knowledge of quality testing practices, including front-end testing frameworks.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

What You'll Love

  • A collaborative, kind, and curious community.
  • Flexibility with full-time hybrid remote work.
  • Comprehensive benefits package: medical, dental, and vision insurance.
  • 401(k) plan to help you prepare for your financial future.
  • Unlimited PTO to support your work-life balance.
  • Opportunities for growth and advancement.
