Job description

Commerce Engineering Lead, Technolody & Growth

About This Role

At tarte, our technology team moves as quickly as our business does. We're looking for a hands-on, experienced engineer who is excited to spend time in the code, collaborate closely with our cross-functional teams, and help shape the technology behind our growing global ecommerce business.

Tarte is a founder-led brand that moves fast, stays close to our customers, and adapts when new opportunities arise. Our engineering team supports a Shopify Plus platform powering a global DTC business across 50 active markets, with an ecommerce experience that is constantly evolving through product launches, influencer activations, OMS integrations, and new AI-powered capabilities.

In this role, you'll be a key technical partner across our commerce ecosystem: writing code, defining architecture, solving complex technical challenges, and bringing thoughtful solutions to the table. You'll work directly with Product, Merchandising, Marketing, and other cross-functional partners on technical decisions that support the customer experience and drive the business forward.

What You'll Own

Hands-On Technical Expertise

Writing code is a core part of this role. You'll contribute to Shopify Plus custom apps using Liquid, Node.js, and React; own and extend AWS Lambda functions that connect our OMS to the broader commerce stack; and partner with our OMS team on backend integrations across order management, fulfillment, and downstream systems.

When complex technical challenges arise, you'll help evaluate the options, identify the right path forward, and bring others along by explaining the why behind technical decisions.

Architecture Guidance & Team Collaboration

As the key architectural decision-maker, you'll review architecture notes, call out risks before they become incidents, and design implementations with long-term scope in mind.

You'll evaluate whether today's solution holds up if the system expands down the road while building the team's ability to make these calls independently over time.

You'll also be a resource for other engineers, sharing your experience through technical discussions, code reviews, and collaborative problem solving while helping the team continue to grow its technical capabilities.

Marketing & Business Partnership

You understand that great technology starts with understanding what the business is trying to accomplish. You'll work closely with Marketing, Merchandising, Product, and other teams to understand upcoming launches, initiatives, and opportunities, then help translate those needs into thoughtful technical solutions.

You're comfortable connecting technical decisions to business outcomes and communicating complex ideas in a way that is clear, practical, and actionable for both technical and non-technical partners.

Vendor Evaluations & Platform Intelligence

You'll own technical vendor evaluations, from defining criteria and conducting assessments to providing clear, thoughtful recommendations.

You'll also stay ahead of the Shopify Plus roadmap and broader ecommerce landscape, proactively identifying platform changes, new capabilities, and opportunities that could benefit tarte. Site performance, digital accessibility, and the overall customer experience will remain top of mind as you evaluate new features and functionality.

AI-First Commerce

We're actively exploring how AI can make the way we build, test, deploy, and optimize our ecommerce experiences even smarter.

You'll contribute to AI-enabled deployment workflows, GEO and LLM product discovery, automated quality gates, and other emerging applications of AI across the commerce stack. You bring a practical and curious perspective on where AI can create meaningful value and are excited to experiment, learn, and help turn new ideas into real-world solutions.

What You Bring

What We're Looking For:

  • 7+ years of ecommerce engineering with expert-level command of the full stack: frontend (HTML, CSS, JavaScript, modern frameworks), middleware, backend services and APIs, databases, and Shopify Plus (Liquid, theme development, Shopify APIs, custom apps, Checkout Extensibility, Shopify Flow, metafields, and multi-market configuration). Technical depth to architect, debug, and make trade-off decisions at every layer.
  • Hands-on experience building, troubleshooting, and maintaining AWS Lambda functions or equivalent serverless technologies
  • Proven track record architecting integrations across the commerce ecosystem: ERP, OMS, CRM, payments, and fulfillment
  • Ability to clearly communicate technical architecture and decisions to both technical and non-technical partners
  • Experience mentoring and collaborating with other engineers and sharing technical knowledge across a team
  • Comfortable owning vendor evaluations, including setting criteria, assessing technical capabilities, and providing recommendations
  • Flexible and adaptable in your approach, with the ability to respond to changing priorities and feedback
  • A solutions-oriented mindset: when the original request isn't technically feasible, you look for creative and practical alternatives

Additional Technical Skills:

  • JavaScript / TypeScript, React, and Node.js
  • GraphQL, REST APIs, and webhook-based integrations
  • CI/CD pipelines, Git workflows, and automated testing
  • Web performance fundamentals, including Core Web Vitals, page speed, and third-party script management
  • Hands-on experience using Postman to troubleshoot, validate, and diagnose API behavior, including authentication, request/response payloads, environment configuration, and error handling

What Will Make You Stand Out:

  • Experience with GEO, LLM-based product discovery, or AI tooling within an ecommerce environment
  • Experience working within founder-led, DTC, beauty, fashion, or lifestyle brands
  • An understanding of what it takes to succeed in a fast-moving consumer brand where priorities can evolve quickly
  • Curiosity about emerging ecommerce technologies and a desire to continuously test, learn, and improve
  • The ability to balance technical depth with a strong understanding of the customer and the business

Our Culture

Tarte is a global beauty brand with the energy and entrepreneurial spirit of a founder-led business. We move quickly, think creatively, and stay close to our customers. Our teams are collaborative, curious, and commercially minded, with a shared focus on creating great experiences and driving the business forward.

Our roadmap is always evolving, and priorities can shift as new opportunities emerge. We value people who are comfortable with change, communicate openly, and enjoy solving problems together.

You're someone who can take an idea or business need, ask thoughtful questions, collaborate with the right partners, and turn it into a solution that works. You're excited by an environment where you can be hands-on, have an impact, and see your work come to life across a global ecommerce platform.

This role is hybrid and based in New York City, with two days per week in office required.

Our Perks

  • Salary range: $130,000-150,000 (Compensation will depend on a variety of factors, including but not limited to skill level, relevant work experience & education)
  • Medical, dental, vision, 401K plan & access to health & wellness programs
  • Paid vacation, holidays, summer Fridays, birthdays off, volunteer time & more
  • Makeup gratis, employee discount on tarte.com, team give back initiatives
  • Friendly, fun, creative & collaborative work environment

Tarte is an equal opportunity employer.
