What is a Java data engineer?

A Java Data Engineer is a technology professional who designs, develops, and maintains data processing systems using Java programming language. They work with large datasets, build data pipelines, and ensure the efficient movement, transformation, and storage of data. Java Data Engineers often collaborate with data scientists, analysts, and other engineers to support data-driven decision-making in organizations. Their expertise typically includes Java, SQL, big data technologies like Hadoop or Spark, and cloud platforms. They play a crucial role in enabling reliable and scalable data infrastructure for businesses.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Java data engineer?

To thrive as a Java Data Engineer, you need strong programming skills in Java, a solid understanding of data structures, SQL, and experience with big data frameworks, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with data processing tools like Apache Spark, Hadoop, Kafka, and experience with cloud data platforms (e.g., AWS, GCP) or relevant certifications are typically required. Analytical thinking, problem-solving ability, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for collaborating with teams and interpreting data requirements. These capabilities are essential for building reliable, scalable data solutions that support business intelligence and analytics needs.

What are the most common challenges faced by Java data engineers when working with large-scale data pipelines?

Java Data Engineers often encounter challenges with optimizing the performance and scalability of data pipelines, especially as data volumes grow. They must ensure data integrity and consistency while managing distributed systems and integrating with various data sources. Debugging issues in real-time data processing and maintaining efficient, fault-tolerant code are also key hurdles. Collaborating closely with data scientists, database administrators, and DevOps teams is essential to overcome these challenges and deliver reliable data solutions.

Job description

Responsibilities

Peraton Labs is seeking a Data Engineer to support development of the Digital Command Center and related data-driven capabilities for the FAA BNATCS program. This role is best suited for a hands-on builder who can develop data pipelines, transformation logic, integrations, and data-backed application components that support analytics, visualization, and evolving agentic AI workflows.

The ideal candidate is a strong developer with data engineering instincts who can write code, work across data sources, build practical solutions, and help turn raw/fragmented information into usable products and capabilities. Experience supporting or developing Agentic AI workflows is a plus.

This role offers the chance to help build the technical backbone behind a highly visible aviation modernization program. You will work on practical, data-driven capabilities that sit between analytics, software, and emerging agentic AI workflows, helping turn fragmented data and evolving requirements into real technical products with immediate operational value.

Key responsibilities may include:

  • Design, develop, and maintain data pipelines, transformations, integrations, and supporting application logic for the Digital Command Center
  • Build data-driven components that support dashboards, analytics products, visualization layers, and internal decision-support capabilities
  • Write production-quality code to ingest, process, transform, and expose data for downstream use
  • Partner with data, systems, operations, and visualization stakeholders to translate requirements into usable technical solutions
  • Support integration of multiple structured and semi-structured data sources across evolving program needs
  • Develop and refine backend logic, APIs, scripts, or services that enable analytics and user-facing data products
  • Help operationalize data flows and application functionality in support of internal Agentic AI tools and workflows
  • Contribute to the development of practical, maintainable technical solutions rather than one-off analysis artifacts
  • Help identify performance issues, data quality problems, integration gaps, and technical constraints affecting delivery
  • Work closely with architects, data leads, and software teams to ensure solutions are scalable, supportable, and aligned to broader platform goals
  • Support rapid iteration in a dynamic environment where requirements and use cases will continue to evolve
Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum of a BS degree with 5+ years of experience, MS degree with 3+ YoE, or PhD in Computer Science, Data Engineering, Information Systems, Data Analytics, or a related field
  • Strong hands-on development experience with Python
  • Strong experience with SQL and working with relational and/or analytical data stores
  • Experience building data pipelines, transformation workflows, backend data services, or data-driven applications
  • Experience with Agentic AI systems, autonomous workflows, MCP and system tools, LLM-enabled applications, or intelligent orchestration environments
  • Demonstrated ability to write code and develop technical solutions in a production, prototype, or mission-support environment
  • Experience working across multiple data sources and integrating data for downstream analytics, dashboards, or application use
  • Experience with cloud environments, containerization, and deployment tooling such as Docker, Kubernetes, or Terraform
  • Ability to work effectively at the intersection of technical implementation and business or mission needs
  • Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving ability, and attention to detail
  • US Citizenship with ability to obtain and maintain an FAA Public Trust suitability

Preferred Additional Qualifications

  • Experience building or supporting applications that use LLMs at the API level
  • Experience with additional languages such as JavaScript, TypeScript, Java, C++, or similar
  • Experience with APIs, microservices, or backend service development
  • Experience with databases, data warehouses, or analytics platforms such as PostgreSQL, MySQL, Snowflake, BigQuery, Redshift, or similar technologies
  • Experience supporting dashboards, analytics platforms, digital command environments, or decision-support tools
  • Familiarity with FAA dashboard development, aviation operations, transportation systems, or other complex mission environments
  • Experience in prototype development, applied R&D, or fast-moving technical programs
