Java Contract information

What is a Java contract?

A Java contract job is a temporary position where a programmer is hired to work on projects using the Java programming language for a fixed period, rather than as a permanent employee. Contractors are often brought in to fill skill gaps, complete specific projects, or handle increased workloads. These roles can be full-time or part-time and typically last from a few months to over a year, depending on the project's needs. Contractors may work onsite or remotely and are usually paid hourly or by project milestone. Java contract jobs offer flexibility and the opportunity to work with a variety of companies and technologies.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Java contract, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Java Contractor, you need strong proficiency in Java programming, experience with object-oriented design, and a solid understanding of software development methodologies, often supported by a relevant degree or certifications like Oracle Certified Professional Java Programmer (OCPJP). Familiarity with development tools such as Eclipse or IntelliJ IDEA, version control systems like Git, and frameworks such as Spring or Hibernate is typically required. Excellent problem-solving, adaptability, and communication skills help you collaborate with diverse teams and quickly respond to project changes. These skills ensure high-quality, maintainable code and successful completion of contract-based software projects.

What are some common challenges faced by Java contracts and how can they be managed effectively?

Java contractors often work on short-term projects or fill skill gaps in development teams, which can present challenges such as quickly adapting to new codebases and varying team dynamics. To manage these effectively, it’s important to have strong communication skills, a proactive approach to understanding project requirements, and the ability to rapidly learn existing systems. Building rapport with permanent team members and maintaining thorough documentation can also help ease the transition. Staying current with Java frameworks and tools further ensures you can contribute value from day one.

What is the difference between Java Contract vs Java Developer?

AspectJava ContractJava Developer
CredentialsTypically requires Java certifications, experience in contract rolesRequires Java certifications, degree in computer science or related field
Work EnvironmentProject-based, short-term assignments, flexible hoursFull-time, ongoing employment, structured work hours
Employer & Industry UsageUsed by companies for specific projects, consulting firmsEmployed directly by companies, tech firms, or agencies
Search & Comparison IntentOften compared for contract opportunities, flexibilityCompared for full-time roles, career growth

Java Contract roles are typically project-based, offering short-term assignments with flexible schedules, ideal for those seeking variety or freelance work. Java Developers usually work full-time, with ongoing responsibilities and career development opportunities. Both roles require Java certifications and experience, but differ mainly in employment type and work environment.

Work Arrangement: This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to the office three days per week, at minimum.

The Role

The Data Engineering organization at General Motors Canada is developing a unified, scalable Vehicle Logging Architecture to enable consistent, secure, and highfidelity logging from vehicle ECUs to the cloud. We're seeking a Staff Embedded Logging Software Developer to design and integrate embedded logging pipelines across diverse invehicle platforms, ensuring cohesive interaction between the control plane (configuration, arbitration, lifecycle) and the data plane (streaming telemetry and filebased transfer).

The ideal candidate brings deep embedded expertise in C/C++ and Android, a track record of delivering solutions across Android Automotive, Linux, and QNX, and handson experience scaling log data flows from ECU to cloud while meeting strict reliability, performance, and security requirements.

What You'll Do (Responsibilities)

Embedded Platform Logging

  • Define and implement Platform Log Client behaviors across Android, Linux, and QNX.

  • Manage volatile buffers and persistent storage (log files and packages), including rotation, compression, retention, and quotas.

  • Support vehiclelocal data access mechanisms (e.g., USBbased retrieval) when connectivity is limited.

Control Plane Integration

  • Build/extend a Log Control Interface Library to handle configuration retrieval, validation, arbitration (including TTL for local overrides), and persistence/fallback to lastknowngood.

  • Implement interactions between vehicle log control logic, platform clients, and configuration providers.

  • Define API contracts for configuration updates, log control, and create/upload package triggers; align with invehicle UX/HMI flows.

Data Plane Integration

  • Design and operate reliable egress paths for:

    o Log Streaming

o Filebased transfer of highfidelity artifacts (binary logs, crash dumps, multifile log packages).

  • Specific behaviors to ensure dependable delivery under varying connectivity and resource conditions.

Reliability, Performance & Security

  • Implement runtime controls to enable/disable logging subsystems locally and remotely

  • Establish startup sequencing and resource budgets (CPU, memory, flash) that safeguard realtime and safetycritical workloads.

  • Ensure compliance with cybersecurity and dataprotection requirements for both local and remote access to log settings and log data.

Standards, Documentation & Collaboration

  • Champion consistent logging schemas, naming, and formatting across platforms; drive structured logging best practices.

  • Produce clear design documents, configuration guides, and support operational runbooks.

  • Collaborate closely with embedded platform teams, observability/data engineering, product, and validation to deliver endtoend data flows from ECU to cloud.

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.

  • 8+ years in embedded software development or systems engineering across Android, Linux, and/or QNX.

  • Strong coding proficiency in C/C++ and Android Java with experience in platformlevel integrations.

  • Demonstrated experience integrating with control plane services (configuration retrieval, arbitration, persistence/fallback) and data plane pipelines (streaming and filebased transfer).

  • Handson experience with:

o File management workflows; file rotation/compression, retention, and storage quotas.

o Logger ecosystems (e.g., Android logs, QNX slogger2, Linux journal/syslog) and buffer/file management at scale.

  • Deep understanding of ECU constraints: startup sequencing, CPU/memory/flash budgets, and contention mitigation.

  • Familiarity with structured logging guidelines and driving crossteam compliance.

  • Experience designing metrics/telemetry for operational visibility and remote control at fleet scale.

  • Clear, concise technical communication; strong crossteam collaboration and design documentation skills.

What Can Give You a Competitive Advantage (Preferred Qualifications)

  • Experience designing driver/HMIinitiated capture flows (e.g., create/upload log packages).

  • Knowledge of automotive cybersecurity controls and dataprotection processes.

  • Exposure to OpenTelemetry, protobuf/gRPC, or similar observability/dataplane technologies.

  • Contributions to or strong affinity for opensource observability/logging ecosystems.

  • Automotive domain familiarity: ECU architectures, SoC platforms, diagnostics, failure/crash analysis

Compensation:

The salary range for this role is $147,000 to $196,600. The actual base salary a successful candidate will be offered within this range will vary based on factors relevant to the position.
