What does an IVC nurse do?

An IVC (Intravenous Catheter) nurse specializes in the insertion, management, and care of intravenous catheters used to deliver fluids, medications, or nutrients directly into a patient's bloodstream. They assess patients’ veins, perform IV starts, monitor for complications like infection or infiltration, and educate patients and families about IV care. Their expertise ensures safe, effective intravenous therapy and often supports patients with complex medical needs in hospitals or outpatient settings.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an intravenous certified nurse, and why are they important?

To thrive as an IV Certified Nurse, you need a solid background in nursing fundamentals, intravenous therapy techniques, and a valid IV certification in addition to your nursing license. Familiarity with infusion pumps, venipuncture equipment, and electronic health records is essential for safe and efficient care. Attention to detail, patience, and strong communication skills help in managing patient discomfort and effectively explaining procedures. These skills and qualifications are crucial to ensure patient safety, prevent complications, and deliver high-quality IV therapy.
