Responsibilities:
Job Summary
The Emergency Room Nurse performs the primary functions of a Registered Nurse in assessing, planning, implanting and evaluating the care of all assigned patients in the emergency room during his/her shift. ESD RN is also responsible for meeting the established standards of nursing practice for managing all assigned personnel, supplies and equipment in the emergency room and for promoting teamwork with physicians and personnel of other departments.
Duties
  • Holds self-accountable for delivery of quality patient care including nursing assessment and evaluation
  • Ability to appropriately triage patients and render care as appropriate per hospital policies
  • Holds self accountable for providing respiratory care in the absence of the respiratory therapist to include respiratory treatments, O2 delivery, obtaining Arterial blood gasses, and EKG
  • Receives report from other hospital personnel and outside agencies in a timely and concise manner
  • Promotes harmonious relationships and favorable attitudes among the healthcare team
  • Supports and adheres to administrative and nursing department policies and procedures
  • Acts rapidly and effectively, manages self, patient and other employees during any emergency situations
  • Implementation of individualized nursing actions/interventions consistent with the patient care plan, while actively involving the patients family
  • Demonstrates ability to plan, organize and prioritize nursing care effectively
  • Tailors delivery of care in a manner appropriate to the patients age and/or developmental stage by:
    • Determining the patients age and developmental stage
    • Assessing the patients physical developments, psychosocial needs, educational needs and/or safety needs as necessary
    • Providing health care education/instruction, medication administration, pain management therapies and/or respiratory therapies appropriate to patient
    • Providing resources appropriate to patient such as but not limited to: primary care physicians, specialty physicians as referred, mental health services, counseling services, clinics and shelters
  • Intervenes accurately, completely, and timely according to the prescribed medical regimen, current scientific knowledge and nursing standards
  • Implements nursing actions including principles of safe practice and infection
  • Documents/reports pertinent information in the patients medical record related to the care rendered and the patients response to that care
  • Maintains clean and organized unit
  • Attends unit staff meetings and mandatory in-service and reviews memorandum and communications as written and posted
  • Assesses the delivery of nursing care in the emergency room, identifies areas for improvement, and plans ways to problem solve in collaboration with the charge nurse and the Manager of Emergency Services
  • Participates in implementing planned departmental changes and activities to improve nursing service
  • Completes all required competencies
  • Awareness of this facilities trauma center designation; nor-cal policies pertaining to and the emergency departments role in adhering to these guidelines
  • Complies with hospital policies related to absences and punctuality
  • Demonstrates appropriate appearance, dress, neatness and cleanliness according to hospital policy
  • Observes and respects confidentiality of information in regard to patients, physicians and fellow employees
  • Maintains awareness of own limitations in regard to scope of practice and hospital policies
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Work area is well lighted and ventilated. Regularly exposed to the risks of blood borne and airborne diseases. Contact with patients in a wide variety of circumstances. Exposed to noise, chemicals, communicable diseases, and hazardous materials. Wears personal protective equipment as required.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, use hands to handle or feel objects, or controls; each with hands and arms; and talk to hear. The employee is frequently required to walk or stand for extended periods, occasionally required to sit, balance; stoop, kneel or crouch.
The employee must frequently lift and/or move 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds with help.
