What is an iteration manager?

Iteration Managers are professionals who facilitate and oversee agile development processes within a team, ensuring that each iteration or sprint runs smoothly. They help coordinate tasks, remove obstacles, and support team members in achieving their goals. Unlike traditional project managers, Iteration Managers focus on enabling the team rather than directing it, promoting collaboration and continuous improvement. Their role is essential for maintaining momentum, transparency, and delivering quality outcomes in agile environments.

How does an iteration manager typically facilitate collaboration between cross-functional teams during a sprint?

An Iteration Manager plays a central role in fostering collaboration by organizing and leading key agile ceremonies such as daily stand-ups, sprint planning, and retrospectives. They ensure that team members from different disciplines—such as developers, testers, and business analysts—communicate effectively and are aligned on goals and deliverables. By actively removing impediments and encouraging open dialogue, Iteration Managers help teams stay focused, address challenges quickly, and deliver value consistently throughout each sprint.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an iteration manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Iteration Manager, you need a solid understanding of Agile methodologies, project management principles, and experience facilitating team processes, often backed by a degree in IT or business and relevant Agile certifications such as Scrum Master or SAFe. Familiarity with tools like Jira, Confluence, and other Agile project management systems is typically required. Strong communication, facilitation, and conflict resolution skills help drive team collaboration and continuous improvement. These capabilities are vital for ensuring that teams deliver value efficiently, adapt to change, and maintain high performance throughout project cycles.

What is the difference between Iteration Manager vs Scrum Master?

AspectIteration ManagerScrum Master
Primary FocusOversees multiple iterations and manages overall project flowFacilitates Scrum processes within a team
CertificationsAgile certifications, PMP often preferredCertified ScrumMaster (CSM), SAFe certifications common
Work EnvironmentProgram or project level, often in larger organizationsTeam level, Scrum teams in Agile environments

While both roles support Agile practices, the Iteration Manager oversees multiple iterations across projects, focusing on overall delivery, whereas the Scrum Master concentrates on facilitating Scrum within a single team. The Iteration Manager has a broader scope, often in larger organizations, while the Scrum Master works closely with specific teams to implement Agile processes effectively.

Job description

Your work days are brighter here.

We're obsessed with making hard work pay off, for our people, our customers, and the world around us. As a Fortune 500 company and a leading AI platform for managing people, money, and agents, we're shaping the future of work so teams can reach their potential and focus on what matters most. The minute you join, you'll feel it. Not just in the products we build, but in how we show up for each other. Our culture is rooted in integrity, empathy, and shared enthusiasm. We're in this together, tackling big challenges with bold ideas and genuine care. We look for curious minds and courageous collaborators who bring sun-drenched optimism and drive. Whether you're building smarter solutions, supporting customers, or creating a space where everyone belongs, you'll do meaningful work with Workmates who've got your back. In return, we'll give you the trust to take risks, the tools to grow, the skills to develop and the support of a company invested in you for the long haul. So, if you want to inspire a brighter work day for everyone, including yourself, you've found a match in Workday, and we hope to be a match for you too.

About the Team

As part of the Enterprise AI organization within Business Technology, we are the architects of Workday's "Customer Zero" strategy. Our mission is to transform our own global operations into a powerhouse of innovation by deploying a cutting-edge, AI-driven ecosystem of tools and services. We are a team of builders and skeptics relentlessly questioning the status quo to deliver the scalable, intuitive technology that defines the future of work. By joining us, you'll be part of a team that doesn't just build our products-we are the first to prove their power at scale.

About the Role

As the AI Product Owner for Customer Zero, you will occupy one of the most unique and influential seats at Workday. You aren't just building features for a hypothetical user; you are transforming our own enterprise-a global organization of thousands-into the ultimate proving ground for Workday's innovation. Your mission is to treat Workday-the-company as our most demanding, sophisticated, and strategic customer. You will hunt for friction points within our internal business processes, architect end-to-end AI-powered solutions using our own technology stack, and ensure that by the time a product reaches our external customers, it has been forged in the fire of real-world enterprise complexity.

Job Duties:

  • Drive Internal Discovery & Strategy: Partner with internal business leaders (HR, Finance, IT, and Operations) to identify high-impact problems that can be solved using Workday's product suite.

  • Architect and Deliver AI-powered Solutions: Work closely with engineering, UX and business stakeholders to turn emerging AI capabilities and ambiguous business problems into holistic end-to-end AI/ML driven product solutions.

  • Provide Continuous Feedback: Serve as the primary bridge to the core Product & Technology teams. You will translate internal "pains" into actionable product requirements, identifying gaps and advocating for the features needed to make our products world-class.

  • Define and Operationalize Success Metrics: Define and implement measurable KPIs including quality, adoption, trust, and business value, using data-driven insights to guide rapid iteration.

  • Manage stakeholder alignment: Set clear expectations with business stakeholders and timely communicate roadmap progress, execution trade-offs, and the measurable impact of AI initiatives.

  • Champion Workday Solutions: Use our internal success stories (and failures) to create blueprints, best practices, and case studies that help our external customers maximize their own Workday investment.

About You

Basic Qualifications:

  • 10+ years of product management experience in enterprise domains (IT, HR, Finance preferred).

  • 3+ years building AI/ML or GenAI-powered products (e.g., agents, copilots, or automation).

  • 3+ years of experience with AI product infrastructure.

  • Technical proficiency with AI and LLM-powered technology

  • Proven track record of end-to-end product delivery from concept to scale with measurable business impact.

  • Demonstrated experience translating complex workflows into scalable product solutions

Other Qualifications:

  • Deep understanding of AI product lifecycle, including experimentation loops, evaluation, and iteration using qualitative and quantitative data.

  • Mastery in leading Cross-Team Collaboration, effectively working and influencing cross-functionally to define and deliver complex product strategies and initiatives.

  • Expert ability to simplify ambiguity, break down complex problems, and prioritize effectively in alignment with business objectives.

  • Ability to define long-term product vision and translate insights, feedback, and data into clear product direction.

  • Experience defining and operationalizing success metrics, and using them to guide decisions.

  • Excellent executive communication skills, with the ability to articulate strategy and recommendations clearly.

  • Comfort operating in fast-paced environments, with resilience and bias toward action.

  • Master's degree in Computer Science or related technical field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Open to 50% reporting to Pleasanton or Denver offices

Our Approach to Flexible Work

With Flex Work, we're combining the best of both worlds: in-person time and remote. Our approach enables our teams to deepen connections, maintain a strong community, and do their best work. We know that flexibility can take shape in many ways, so rather than a number of required days in-office each week, we simply spend at least half (50%) of our time each quarter in the office or in the field with our customers, prospects, and partners (depending on role). This means you'll have the freedom to create a flexible schedule that caters to your business, team, and personal needs, while being intentional to make the most of time spent together. Those in our remote "home office" roles also have the opportunity to come together in our offices for important moments that matter.

Pursuant to applicable Fair Chance law, Workday will consider for employment qualified applicants with arrest and conviction records.
