The Indian Teacher Education Program (ITEP) has been strengthening First Nations education since 1972 in support of the vision of the National Indian Brotherhood's statement on Indian Control of Indian Education. ITEP is the largest teacher education program in the territories of Canada whose enrolment is centered on the needs of First Nations teacher candidates. ITEP plays a lead role in the achievement of the University of Saskatchewan's and the College of Education's strategic aims of Indigenous engagement and reconciliation. As an Indigenous teacher education program, ITEP prepares First Nations teachers to rely on the strengths of their cultures, languages, protocols and traditions to create safe and inclusive learning spaces for learners built on respect, relationality, reciprocity, and responsibility.

Primary Purpose: This position provides academic, administrative, and personal support for ITEP student success.
Nature of Work: The Student Coordinator will provide personal wellness activities and check ins with ITEP Students. This a fast-paced position that requires making connections with team players within the College of Education and University that lead to student success.
Typical Duties or Accountabilities:

• Build relationships with ITEP Students.
• Identify, develop and implement strategies to assist, support and retain ITEP Students, year one to year four.
• Assess, evaluate and support culturally sensitive individual student academic needs.
• Assist students in addressing barriers that are hindering their success in their program.
• Offer support to students through extra tutorials, workshops and study opportunities.
• Link students with existing campus academic, counseling or technical support to promote mental health and academic success.
• Assist the ITEP staff with events such as registration seminar, orientations and cultural activities.
• Understands and abides by confidentiality practices.
• Other related duties as assigned.

Education: Bachelor of Education Degree, valid Saskatchewan Teaching Certificate or the ability to obtain such as well as related experience working with and knowledge of provincial and First Nations curricula in Saskatchewan. Knowledge of First Nations, Metis and Inuit cultures, protocol and perspectives. Knowledge of the College of Education courses, policies and degree requirements.
Experience: At least one year experience in post-secondary program advising is an asset; demonstrated ability to work with students, faculty and staff on student related issues in a post-secondary setting; a thorough understanding of First Nation, Metis and Inuit protocols; knowledge of First Nations, Metis and Inuit policies and practices in First Nations educational jurisdictions; thorough understanding of the University environment and related policies, procedures and regulations; demonstrated ability to work with a wide variety of people in a complex environment; knowledge and sensitivity to First Nations and off campus communities is required; working knowledge of the University computer systems for students and programs including student systems of the University (SiRIUS, Advisor Services, PAWS, as well as Microsoft office applications) is an asset.
