Job description

Mechanical Engineer III - Analytical Focus
Department: Engineering (126) CT
Employment Type: Full Time
Location: Chester, CT
Description
Responsible for using analytical tools to assess and optimize the structural and thermal constraints of Whelen products as well as concepting and designing new products or product enhancement features. Candidate will follow the design process starting with concept initiation and follow it through total product assembly and functionality testing. The process will be facilitated by leveraging the understanding of core concepts in Mechanical Engineering. Candidate engages in continuous learning of the fundamentals of Mechanical Engineering.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provide analytical support for preliminary & detailed designs, through development, validation, certification, manufacturing and operational service
  • Use FEA and classical methods for strength, stress/deflection, vibration, fatigue life, kinematic and optimization analyses to meet design requirements
  • Use simulations and classical methods to predict temperatures, heat transfer, and fluid characteristics as needed to meet design requirements
  • Perform test-model correlation testing to validate analytical predictions
  • Work closely with environmental test engineers to support the design, instrumentation selection, execution, and data processing of tests to validate models and predictions
  • Prepare technical reports to present findings to internal teams, management, and external customers
  • Stay current with advancements in thermal analysis techniques, materials technology, and industry standards
  • Create and document the Structural and Thermal analytical methods for Whelen Engineering
  • Provide oversight and technical guidance for less experienced engineers
  • Collaborate with other departments such as Manufacturing Engineering, Test Engineering, Electrical Engineering and QA to be able to solve problems related to Engineering issues
  • Responsible for several components of a project or a complex component of a larger project
  • Fully developed professional, able to work without direct guidance or direction from others

Education and Experience
  • BS degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering field w/ 8+ years' experience or MA/MS degree w/5-6+ years' experience
  • Experience with Solidworks Simulation & Solidworks Flow Simulation (CFD)
  • Background in Structural Analysis & Thermal Analysis
  • Experience using FEM for stress/deflection, vibration, and performing LCF, HCF, Fracture Mechanics or Kinematics analyses
  • Familiarity with Matlab or Python (or equivalent) for developing analytical models and performing data acquisition & post-processing
  • Experience with performing test-model correlation and test based characterization of critical modelling input parameters
  • Proficient knowledge of materials and manufacturing processes
  • Proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Active user/experience with engineering software including SolidWorks , AutoCAD or equivalent
  • Experience with PDM and PLM software and processes is also preferred
