What is the difference between Iot Full Stack Developer vs Iot Software Engineer?

AspectIot Full Stack DeveloperIot Software Engineer
Required SkillsFrontend & backend development, IoT protocols, cloud integrationEmbedded systems, firmware, IoT protocols, software development
Work EnvironmentCross-functional teams, full project lifecycleEmbedded hardware, firmware, software testing
Common UsageDesigning complete IoT applications, user interfacesDeveloping device firmware, embedded software

The main difference is that IoT Full Stack Developers handle both frontend and backend development for IoT solutions, focusing on user interfaces and cloud integration. IoT Software Engineers primarily work on embedded systems and firmware for IoT devices. Both roles require knowledge of IoT protocols, but their focus areas differ, with Full Stack Developers managing entire applications and Software Engineers concentrating on device-level software.

Is IoT a high paying job?

IoT Full Stack Developers often earn above-average salaries due to their specialized skills in hardware, software, and networking. Compensation varies based on experience, location, and certifications, but the role generally offers competitive pay within the tech industry.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an IoT full stack developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an IoT Full Stack Developer, you need expertise in both hardware and software integration, proficiency in programming languages like Python, JavaScript, and C/C++, and a solid understanding of networking protocols. Experience with IoT platforms (such as AWS IoT or Azure IoT), database management, and familiarity with embedded systems and cloud services are typically required, along with relevant certifications. Strong problem-solving abilities, effective communication, and adaptability set top performers apart in this role. These skills are crucial for building reliable, scalable IoT solutions that bridge devices, data, and user interfaces while ensuring seamless collaboration across multidisciplinary teams.

Are IoT full stack developers still in demand?

IoT full stack developers are still in demand due to the growing adoption of connected devices and smart systems across industries. They are valued for their skills in hardware integration, software development, and cloud platforms, often requiring knowledge of programming languages like Python, JavaScript, and experience with IoT protocols. The demand is expected to continue as IoT expands into sectors such as manufacturing, healthcare, and home automation.

What is an IoT full stack developer?

An IoT Full Stack Developer is a professional who designs, develops, and maintains both the hardware and software components of Internet of Things (IoT) systems. They work across the entire technology stack, from device firmware and embedded systems to cloud platforms, databases, and user interfaces. These developers are skilled in programming, networking, and data management, enabling the integration and communication of physical devices with digital applications. Their role is crucial in building seamless, secure, and scalable IoT solutions that collect, process, and present data to users or other systems.

What are some common challenges IoT full stack developers face when integrating hardware and software components?

IoT Full Stack Developers often encounter challenges when bridging the gap between embedded hardware and cloud-based applications. Key issues include ensuring reliable communication between devices and servers, managing security risks across multiple layers, and handling large volumes of data generated by connected devices. Additionally, developers must coordinate with hardware engineers, firmware developers, and backend teams to ensure seamless integration and optimal performance. Adaptability and strong problem-solving skills are crucial for overcoming these technical and collaborative hurdles.

Job description

Owl Labs is looking for a Senior Full Stack Engineer to build customer-facing product experiences and the backend systems that support them. You'll work across frontend, backend, cloud infrastructure, and device-connected workflows, partnering cross-functionally to ship high-quality software in an evolving, fast-paced environment.

WHAT YOU'LL DO:

  • Build and ship customer-facing features across the Owl Labs customer portal — a React + Vite SPA used daily by customers to manage their devices.
  • Drive and contribute to active codebase migrations (i.e. JavaScript → TypeScript) to improve reliability, safety, and long-term maintainability.
  • Own performance work: identify and fix bottlenecks through virtualization, memoization, code splitting, and bundle optimization.
  • Work within and occasionally extend our shared design system, contributing reusable components and UX improvements.
  • Write unit tests as a standard part of every change and contribute to our Playwright e2e suite to keep the portal stable as it evolves.
  • Design, build, and operate backend services on AWS (Lambda, ECS, API Gateway, S3, IAM) that power the customer portal and device management workflows.
  • Model and query data across PostgreSQL and DynamoDB, choosing the right store for the job and optimizing indexes, access patterns, and query performance.
  • Implement IoT communication flows using MQTT and WebSockets, integrating with AWS IoT Core and other messaging services to manage fleets of connected devices.
  • Build decoupled, event-driven systems using queues and event buses (SQS, SNS, EventBridge) to keep the platform scalable and resilient under load.
  • Ship and iterate on RESTful APIs and WebSocket endpoints consumed by frontends and edge devices, with careful attention to versioning, latency, and reliability.
  • Instrument services with logging, metrics, and tracing (CloudWatch, X-Ray, Honeycomb or equivalents) to quickly debug and triage production issues.
  • Use feature flags to release changes safely, run experiments, and coordinate complex migrations across frontend and backend surfaces.
  • Define and maintain BDD/E2E test suites (Playwright, Cypress) that validate behavior end-to-end across web, APIs, and device interactions.
  • Own and improve CI/CD pipelines (e.g., Bitbucket) so deployments are predictable, repeatable, and easy to roll back when needed.
  • Proactively leverage AI tools (e.g., Claude, Codex) to accelerate development, automate repetitive tasks, and keep documentation, tests, and infra configuration up to date.
  • Collaborate with product, design, and hardware/firmware teams, contributing technical insight into roadmap discussions for SaaS and IoT features.

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR:
  • BS/MS in Computer Science, Engineering, et al. or a great portfolio of web-based applications.
  • Strong learning and growth mindset — you are continuously sharpening your skills across the stack (frontend, backend, cloud, IoT) and stay curious about new approaches.
  • Willingness to take on hard, ambiguous challenges, break them down into tractable pieces, and lead others through uncertainty
  • Resilience and comfort with failure — you experiment, learn quickly from what doesn't work, and turn those lessons into better designs and systems.
  • Proven ability to deliver high-quality features and platform improvements under aggressive schedules while maintaining sound engineering judgment.
  • Strong ownership mindset — you take responsibility for outcomes across the stack, from UX and APIs to data models and infrastructure, and you close loops without being asked.
  • Clear, structured communication skills — you can explain tradeoffs to product and design, collaborate with firmware and hardware teams, and keep stakeholders aligned as plans evolve.
  • Track record of effective cross-functional collaboration, including refining requirements, giving constructive feedback, and representing engineering in roadmap discussions.
  • Ability to operate in evolving codebases and systems: you're comfortable when migrations, new features, and reliability work are all happening at once.
  • Bias toward action — you move work forward, unblock others, and make pragmatic decisions with incomplete information while still raising quality over time.
  • Strong mentoring instincts — you help other engineers grow by sharing context, reviewing designs and code thoughtfully, and modeling calm under pressure.

WHAT WE OFFER

  • Competitive medical, dental, and vision benefits.
  • Unlimited PTO
  • Generous Parental Leave
  • Work From Home Stipend
  • Commuter Benefit
  • Flexible Work
  • Paid Holidays
  • Equity
