What does an iOS engineer do?

An iOS engineer designs, develops, and maintains applications for Apple's iOS platform using programming languages like Swift or Objective-C. They collaborate with designers and product managers, write clean code, perform testing, and ensure app performance and security. Knowledge of Xcode, iOS SDK, and app store deployment is essential for the role.

What are some common challenges iOS engineers face when collaborating with cross-functional teams?

iOS Engineers often work closely with designers, product managers, and backend developers, which can present challenges in aligning priorities and timelines. Communication gaps may arise when translating design concepts into functional app features or when ensuring backend APIs meet the requirements of the iOS platform. Staying adaptable, proactively clarifying requirements, and regularly syncing with team members can help iOS Engineers overcome these obstacles and contribute to smoother project delivery.

What is iOS engineering?

iOS engineering is the practice of designing, building, and maintaining applications for Apple’s iOS operating system, which runs on devices like iPhones and iPads. iOS engineers use programming languages such as Swift and Objective-C, alongside tools like Xcode, to develop user-friendly and high-performance mobile apps. Their responsibilities can include creating new app features, fixing bugs, optimizing performance, and ensuring that applications adhere to Apple’s design and security guidelines.

How much does an iOS engineer make?

An iOS engineer's salary varies based on experience, location, and company size, but typically ranges from $80,000 to $150,000 annually. Senior roles or those with specialized skills in Swift, Objective-C, and app development tools can earn higher salaries, especially in competitive markets.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an iOS engineer?

To thrive as an iOS Engineer, you need a solid understanding of Swift/Objective-C, mobile app architecture, and experience developing and deploying applications on Apple's iOS platform, usually supported by a relevant degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with Xcode, Interface Builder, Git, and Apple's Human Interface Guidelines, along with certifications like Apple Certified iOS Developer, are often required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills set top performers apart in this role. These competencies ensure the creation of high-quality, user-friendly apps that align with business goals and provide excellent user experiences.

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Senior iOS Engineer with deep expertise in native iOS development, Swift, SwiftUI, UIKit, application architecture, and the broader Apple ecosystem.

This role is ideal for an engineer who goes beyond building application screens and understands the underlying principles of performance, concurrency, memory management, architecture, and Apple frameworks.

The successful candidate should have experience building and shipping complex production iOS applications and be comfortable discussing technical decisions, architecture, performance optimization, and code quality.

Key Responsibilities
  • Architect, design, and develop scalable native iOS applications using Swift, SwiftUI, and UIKit.
  • Write clean, maintainable, testable, and high-performance code.
  • Design modular and testable application architectures using MVVM, MVC, Clean Architecture, or similar patterns.
  • Apply advanced Swift concepts including concurrency, async/await, protocols, generics, and memory management.
  • Work with Apple APIs and frameworks such as LocalAuthentication, AuthenticationServices, WebKit, CommonCrypto/CryptoKit, and related technologies.
  • Identify and resolve application performance and memory issues using Instruments and profiling tools.
  • Participate in architecture discussions, technical design reviews, and code reviews.
  • Support the complete iOS application lifecycle, including build, testing, signing, provisioning, deployment, and production support.
  • Work with CI/CD pipelines and automated mobile application delivery processes.
  • Mentor developers and promote strong iOS engineering and coding practices.
  • Effectively use AI-assisted development tools while maintaining strong foundational engineering practices.
Required Qualifications
  • Strong professional experience developing native iOS applications.
  • Advanced hands-on expertise with Swift.
  • Strong experience with both SwiftUI and UIKit.
  • Deep understanding of Swift concurrency, async/await, GCD, protocols, and generics.
  • Strong understanding of memory management, data structures, algorithms, and concurrency.
  • Experience designing applications using MVVM, MVC, Clean Architecture, or similar architectural patterns.
  • Experience building and shipping complex production iOS applications.
  • Strong knowledge of the broader Apple SDK and iOS ecosystem.
  • Experience with Xcode, Instruments, performance profiling, debugging, and crash analysis.
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines for iOS applications.
  • Understanding of code signing, certificates, provisioning profiles, TestFlight, and application deployment.
  • Experience writing unit-testable code and working with iOS testing frameworks.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Ability to work onsite in Alpharetta, GA at least 3 days per week.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with LocalAuthentication, AuthenticationServices, WebKit, CommonCrypto, or CryptoKit.
  • Experience developing or integrating APIs.
  • Familiarity with Android/mobile application development.
  • Strong understanding of mobile user experience principles.
  • Experience mentoring or providing technical guidance to other developers.
  • Experience using AI-assisted software development tools.
Interview Focus

Candidates should be comfortable discussing real-world examples of their own iOS development work, particularly around:

  • Advanced Swift language concepts, including concurrency, generics, and protocol design.
  • Apple APIs and frameworks, including UIKit, SwiftUI, AuthenticationServices, WebKit, and related frameworks.
  • iOS ecosystem and engineering practices, including Xcode, CI/CD, performance tuning, app signing, crash analysis, and architectural decisions.

We are looking for engineers who demonstrate strong technical depth, architectural thinking, clear communication, and genuine craftsmanship in native iOS development.
