What is iOS engineering?

iOS engineering is the practice of designing, building, and maintaining applications for Apple’s iOS operating system, which runs on devices like iPhones and iPads. iOS engineers use programming languages such as Swift and Objective-C, alongside tools like Xcode, to develop user-friendly and high-performance mobile apps. Their responsibilities can include creating new app features, fixing bugs, optimizing performance, and ensuring that applications adhere to Apple’s design and security guidelines.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an iOS Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an iOS Engineer, you need a solid understanding of Swift/Objective-C, mobile app architecture, and experience developing and deploying applications on Apple's iOS platform, usually supported by a relevant degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with Xcode, Interface Builder, Git, and Apple's Human Interface Guidelines, along with certifications like Apple Certified iOS Developer, are often required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills set top performers apart in this role. These competencies ensure the creation of high-quality, user-friendly apps that align with business goals and provide excellent user experiences.

Grow Therapy

Full-time

Job description

Grow Therapy is on a mission to serve as the trusted partner for therapists growing their practice, and patients accessing high-quality care. Powered by technology, we are a three-sided marketplace that empowers providers, augments insurance payors, and serves patients. Following the mass increase in depression and anxiety, the need for accessibility is more important than ever. To make our vision for mental healthcare a reality, we're building a team of entrepreneurs and mission-driven go-getters. Since launching in February 2021, we've empowered more than ten thousand therapists and hundreds of thousands of clients across the country and insurance landscape. We've raised more than $328Mm in funding, including our Series D, at a $3B valuation from Sequoia Capital, Transformation Capital, TCV, SignalFire, Menlo Ventures, Goldman Sachs Alternatives, and others.
The Opportunity
We're looking for an Engineering Manager to lead and scale Grow Therapy's iOS engineering team. You'll own the technical vision, people strategy, and execution for our mobile platform - building consumer-grade experiences that help millions of clients access mental healthcare, and thousands of providers manage thriving practices.
As an Engineering Manager within our engineering leadership team, you'll build and develop a high-performance iOS team, drive the technical strategy for our mobile platform, and partner closely with Product, Design, and cross-functional stakeholders to shape what gets built. This role sits at the intersection of mobile craft, product thinking, and engineering leadership. You'll bring clarity to ambiguity, raise the bar for iOS quality, and create an environment where engineers do their best work.
This is a rare opportunity to define the mobile experience for the future of mental healthcare - building the kind of polished, intuitive app that makes care accessible at a national scale.
What You'll Be Doing
  • Define and own the long-term technical vision and strategy for the iOS platform, ensuring our mobile experience is on par with the best consumer apps (Airbnb, Uber, Duolingo)
  • Lead, mentor, and grow a team of 8 - 9 iOS engineers - raising the bar for craft, code quality, performance, and mobile UX
  • Partner with Product and Design leadership to shape the mobile roadmap, ensuring engineering influences direction and doesn't just execute
  • Drive high-quality, high-velocity shipping with strong operational frameworks for planning, prioritization, and delivery excellence
  • Build scalable mobile architecture - owning decisions around app performance, offline capabilities, release management, CI/CD, and platform tooling
  • Use data to guide decisions, instrument systems, measure impact, and continuously optimize the iOS experience
  • Execute on performance management - coach engineers on day-to-day challenges and long-term career development, maintain standards of excellence, and recognize outperformance
  • Foster a welcoming, collaborative, high-trust team culture with low non-regrettable attrition, even in a remote-first environment
  • Contribute to the broader engineering organization by collaborating with peer EMs and leaders on org-wide initiatives and engineering culture

You'll Be a Good Fit If
  • You have 6+ years of professional software engineering experience, including 4+ years leading engineering teams and at least 2+ years managing iOS or mobile-focused teams
  • You have strong iOS technical depth - you understand Swift, UIKit/SwiftUI, mobile architecture patterns, and can engage deeply with your team on technical decisions
  • You have a track record of shipping polished, high-quality mobile experiences at scale in a consumer or marketplace environment
  • You bring a product engineering mindset - you deeply understand user needs and translate them into delightful, high-performance mobile experiences
  • You've scaled teams through rapid growth - you know how to hire, onboard, and develop engineers while maintaining quality and velocity
  • You have exceptional communication and cross-functional leadership skills, including the ability to influence non-technical stakeholders
  • You operate with a founder's mindset - ownership, speed, scrappiness, resilience, and a bias toward action
  • You are passionate about building high-performance teams and developing engineers into future leaders

Role Details:
  • Employment Type: Full Time, Exempt
  • Base Compensation: $225,000-$300,000 USD Annually

Work Arrangement: Hybrid, with required in-office presence 3 days per week at our San Francisco, New York, or Seattle office. This role also includes travel 2-3 times per year for company and department offsites.
Full Time Employee Benefits:
  • Comprehensive Health Coverage: Medical, dental, and vision insurance, plus life and disability coverage.
  • Parental Leave & Family Support: Up to 18 weeks paid leave and a new child stipend.
  • Financial Wellness: 401(k) program and equity opportunities.
  • Meals & Home Office Support: Stipends for home office setup and ongoing funds for meals, with tailored perks for both remote and in-office employees.
  • Time Off to Recharge: Flexible PTO, 12 paid holidays, and a full winter break week.
  • Wellness & Development: Annual stipends to put towards personal & professional growth.
  • Mental & Physical Health Support: No-cost access to therapy through the Grow platform, weekly flexible hours for self-care ("Mental Health Mornings/Afternoons") and memberships to leading wellness apps (such as One Medical, Headspace, and Talkspace).
  • Extra Perks: Pet insurance discounts, commuter benefits, and global travel assistance.

Research shows that some groups hesitate to apply unless they meet every qualification. If you're excited about this role but don't check every box, we encourage you to apply. At Grow, we value diverse experiences, transferable skills, and the unique strengths each person brings.
