What is an iOS contractor?

An iOS Contractor is a freelance or temporary developer specializing in building and maintaining iOS applications for Apple devices. They typically work on short-term projects for companies, startups, or agencies that need expertise in Swift, Objective-C, and Apple's development frameworks. Unlike full-time employees, contractors work on a project basis and may handle multiple clients.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an iOS contractor?

As an iOS Contractor, you should have strong proficiency in Swift and Objective-C, experience with iOS frameworks, and a solid understanding of the full mobile development lifecycle. Familiarity with Xcode, Git, and Apple's Human Interface Guidelines is crucial, and industry certifications like Apple Certified iOS Developer can be advantageous. Excellent communication, time management, and problem-solving skills set top candidates apart, especially when working remotely or with cross-functional teams. These skills ensure high-quality, efficient app development and seamless collaboration for successful project delivery.

What are common challenges faced by iOS contractors, and how can they be addressed?

iOS Contractors often face challenges such as rapidly changing project requirements, integrating with legacy codebases, and ensuring compatibility across multiple device versions. These can be addressed by maintaining clear communication with stakeholders, staying current with iOS updates, and writing clean, modular code. Proactively seeking feedback, participating in regular code reviews, and leveraging documentation help minimize misunderstandings and technical debt. Adapting quickly and collaborating closely with design, QA, and backend teams can also help overcome many of these challenges. Success in contracting roles often depends on your ability to manage time effectively and deliver results within tight deadlines.

Job Description

iOS Mobile Capability Developer

Columbia, MD | Full Time | TS/SCI with Full-Scope Polygraph Required

Position: iOS Mobile Capability Developer (Computer Scientist, Level 1)

Location: Columbia, MD (on-site)

Category: Software Development / Mobile Embedded Platforms / Reverse Engineering

Clearance Requirement: Active TS/SCI with Full-Scope Polygraph

Compensation: $90,000 - $110,000 (annualized USD)

Experience Requirement:

  • 1+ year with a Bachelor's degree, OR

  • 0+ years with a Master's degree

  • At least 1 year of cybersecurity-related software development experience

Description

We are seeking an iOS-savvy software developer to join a small, mission-impactful team building new capabilities on mobile platforms. You'll combine deep iOS internals knowledge with reverse engineering skills to design, prototype, and harden tools that solve real, hard problems.

This role offers room to grow alongside experienced engineers — you'll take ownership of components from the start, and your work will be deployed and used quickly rather than sitting in a backlog.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, modify, and integrate software targeting iOS and related Apple platforms.

  • Reverse engineer iOS applications, libraries, and platform components to inform capability design.

  • Prototype creative solutions to complex platform-level problems and iterate based on testing and user feedback.

  • Produce and maintain technical documentation for the tools and components you build.

  • Collaborate with senior engineers, analysts, and end users to refine requirements and approach.

Skills Requirements

  • Hands-on experience with iOS internals.

  • Reverse engineering experience on mobile or embedded platforms.

  • Production-grade software development experience in at least one systems language (C, C++, Objective-C, Swift).

  • Familiarity with Linux/macOS development environments.

  • Familiarity with Git and Atlassian tooling (Jira, Confluence).

  • Strong critical thinking, communication, and collaboration skills.

Nice to Haves

  • Experience with ARM assembly and low-level debugging.

  • Familiarity with iOS exploitation, jailbreak research, or vulnerability research.

  • Experience with embedded firmware analysis.

  • Exposure to Android, Bluetooth, or other adjacent mobile platforms.

  • Familiarity with GitLab CI/CD workflows.

Compensation Employment Policy

Salary is determined by multiple factors, including location, education, experience, skills, and organizational requirements. The projected compensation range for this position is $90,000 - $110,000 (annualized USD).
