What is an interventional radiology tech?

An Interventional Radiology Tech, also known as an IR Technologist, is a healthcare professional who assists radiologists in performing minimally invasive, image-guided procedures. They prepare and operate imaging equipment such as fluoroscopes, CT scanners, and ultrasound machines to guide doctors during procedures like angioplasties, stent placements, and biopsies. Interventional Radiology Techs are responsible for patient preparation, maintaining sterile environments, monitoring patient vitals, and ensuring high-quality images are captured for accurate diagnosis and treatment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an interventional radiology tech?

To thrive as an Interventional Radiology Tech, you need a solid background in radiologic technology, anatomy, and sterile procedures, typically supported by an associate degree in radiologic technology and ARRT (American Registry of Radiologic Technologists) certification. Familiarity with fluoroscopy, digital imaging systems, and various contrast agents is crucial for safe and effective procedures. Attention to detail, excellent communication, and the ability to remain calm under pressure are valuable soft skills in this role. These qualifications ensure patient safety, precise imaging, and efficient teamwork during complex interventional procedures.
