As an interventional pulmonologist, your responsibilities include using minimally-invasive procedures like bronchoscopy and pleuroscopy to diagnose pulmonary conditions, such as lung disease and cancer. When necessary, you develop a treatment plan to improve the function of the airways. For example, you may implant a stent to open blocked areas or a catheter to permit fluid to drain away. The duties of an interventional pulmonology (IP) specialist also include removing inhaled foreign bodies, biopsying tissues to identify cancer and infections, and treating asthma that has not responded to medication. Interventional pulmonologists also participate in research efforts and often collaborates with peers, such as thoracic surgeons and critical care physicians.
