Interoperability information
What is an interoperability?
An Interoperability job focuses on ensuring that different systems, applications, or devices can communicate and work together seamlessly. Professionals in this field develop and implement standards, protocols, and integration strategies to enable data exchange across platforms. They often work in industries like healthcare, IT, and finance, where system connectivity is critical. Their responsibilities may include API management, data mapping, and troubleshooting integration issues.
What are the main challenges faced by professionals working in interoperability roles?
Professionals in Interoperability roles often encounter challenges related to aligning disparate systems, managing data standards, and ensuring secure and accurate information exchange across platforms. They must troubleshoot issues caused by variations in data formats or inconsistent implementation of protocols, all while collaborating closely with IT, clinical, and vendor teams. Effective communication and a strong understanding of both technical requirements and organizational workflows are essential for resolving these challenges. Overcoming these obstacles is vital to support seamless data flows, which greatly enhances patient care and operational efficiency.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the interoperability position, and why are they important?
To excel in an Interoperability role, you need expertise in data integration, healthcare information exchange standards (such as HL7, FHIR, or EDI), and project management, often backed by a degree in health informatics, computer science, or related fields. Familiarity with integration engines (like Mirth Connect or Cloverleaf), APIs, data mapping tools, and relevant certifications (e.g., Certified Health Data Analyst, HL7 certification) is highly valued. Strong analytical thinking, effective communication, and problem-solving abilities are important soft skills for collaborating with cross-functional teams and addressing connectivity challenges. These skills are crucial to ensure seamless data exchange and system compatibility within complex healthcare or enterprise environments.

Senior Director, Cardiology Platform Architecture & Interoperability
Job Description
Senior Director, Cardiology Platform Architecture & Interoperability is accountable for defining and driving the next-generation cardiology and patient monitoring platform architecture for AM&D.
This role operates as the forward-looking platform leader, responsible for building a cohesive, interoperable, and scalable technology foundation that connects ambulatory workflows end to end while enabling seamless collaboration with hospital-based environments.
This role ensures that hardware, software, data, and AI-enabled capabilities come together into a unified enterprise platform that integrates seamlessly into healthcare systems.
The scope spans healthcare informatics, EMR integration, interoperability frameworks, cloud and hybrid architectures, and enterprise-scale platform design. This role will work closely with HPM as a strategic partner to align on shared platform opportunities, while maintaining clear accountability within AM&D.
This is a multi-year, business-critical role that will materially influence platform direction, speed of innovation, and long-term competitive positioning.
Key Responsibilities
- Own definition of the target architecture for a unified cardiology and patient monitoring platform within AM&D
- Establish platform principles across interoperability, data models, device integration, and platform services
- Lead strategy and execution for healthcare interoperability including EMR integration, HL7, FHIR, SMART, and SMART on FHIR
- Drive adoption of industry standards including IHE frameworks, DICOM, and enterprise integration patterns
- Define platform deployment models across cloud-native, hybrid, and on-prem hospital environments
- Establish architectural patterns for multi-tenant SaaS, data pipelines, real-world evidence, and secure, compliant systems
- Partner with R&D to ensure alignment to platform architecture while avoiding constraints from legacy systems
- Collaborate with HPM to identify shared platform opportunities, reuse potential, and alignment of interoperability approaches
- Define build, buy, and partner strategy for key platform components including cloud, interoperability, and AI capabilities
- Engage with EMR ecosystem leaders including Epic Systems and Oracle Cerner to shape integration strategies and partnerships
- Act as a senior technical leader influencing Product, R&D, Clinical, and Commercial stakeholders across a matrixed organization
- Translate complex technical concepts into clear business decisions and executive-level communication
Success Measures
- Defined and adopted platform architecture within AM&D
- Measurable reduction in product and system fragmentation
- Improved speed and reliability of EMR and enterprise integrations
- Acceleration of platform-based product development and reuse
- Effective collaboration with HPM resulting in aligned platform opportunities without organizational dependency
- Clear roadmap and execution of next-generation platform initiatives
Minimum required Education:
- Bachelor's / Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science Engineering, Innovation, Business or equivalent.
Minimum required Experience:
- Minimum 11 years of experience with Bachelor's OR Minimum 9 years of experience with Master's in areas such as Manufacturing, Production, Engineering, Management, System Design, R&D or equivalent.
- Experience defining and scaling enterprise healthcare platforms or informatics systems
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in cardiology workflows, cardiac monitoring, or diagnostic data platforms
- Experience bridging ambulatory and hospital-based care environments
- Familiarity with AI-enabled healthcare platforms and data ecosystems
- Prior experience in organizations such as GE, Philips, or similar healthcare technology leaders
- Experience defining platform strategies across hardware, software, and data systems
- Deep expertise in EMR integration and interoperability including HL7, FHIR, SMART, and SMART on FHIR
- Strong understanding of healthcare interoperability frameworks including IHE and DICOM
- Experience with cloud-native, hybrid, and on-premise healthcare deployments
- Demonstrated ability to influence large, complex, matrixed organizations without direct authority
- Strong executive communication skills with ability to translate technical depth into business impact
- You must be able to successfully perform the following minimum Physical, Cognitive and Environmental job requirements with or without accommodation for this position.
