Internships In information

What are internships?

Internships are short-term work experiences offered by organizations to students or recent graduates, providing practical exposure to a specific industry or field. They are designed to help individuals gain hands-on skills, build professional networks, and enhance their resumes. Internships can be paid or unpaid and may be part-time or full-time, depending on the organization's needs and the intern's availability. Completing an internship can improve job prospects and help clarify career goals.

What types of projects and responsibilities can I expect during an internship?

During an internship, you can expect to work on a mix of real-world projects and tasks that align with the organization's current needs. Responsibilities often include assisting with ongoing projects, conducting research, preparing reports, or supporting team members with day-to-day operations. Tasks are typically assigned based on your area of study, interests, and skill level, and you may also have opportunities to shadow professionals, attend meetings, or contribute ideas. Interns usually receive guidance from a supervisor or mentor, and regular check-ins help ensure you're gaining valuable experience while contributing meaningfully to the team.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in an internship?

To thrive in internships, you generally need a strong academic background in your field of study, basic industry knowledge, and a willingness to learn. Familiarity with common office software (like Microsoft Office or Google Workspace) and, for some fields, basic technical tools or platforms relevant to the industry is helpful. Strong communication, adaptability, and teamwork skills set standout interns apart. These skills and qualities ensure interns can quickly contribute to projects, integrate smoothly with teams, and maximize their professional learning experience.

  • A DVM (or equivalent) and licensed or eligible for licensure to practice in the Province of Ontario.ย ย

  • Certification as a Diplomate of the American (ACVS) or European (ECVS) College of Veterinary Surgeons. Your Roleย

The candidate is expected to develop and participate in independent or collaborative research, and mentor and supervise small animal surgical residents and graduate students on a rotating basis. External remunerative activities are permitted for up to 25 days per year, but this opportunity may be increased subject to university approval.ย ย
