Job description

Job Overview

The Weed Scientist will design and support a diverse portfolio of lawn and landscape products for ScottsMiracle-Gro Company. The role focuses on product and practice development for homeowners, integrating turfgrass cultural practices and emerging technologies to drive the lawn care category.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead, plan, and implement field and greenhouse biological research, including trial setup, data collection, analysis, and report preparation for regulatory support.
  • Collaborate with R&D, marketing, regulatory, sourcing, and manufacturing teams to align project goals and explore innovation opportunities.
  • Provide technical assistance across departments and contribute to the R&D Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Communicate scientific concepts and research findings to senior leadership, including Directors, VPs, and executives.
  • Support state and EPA registration dossiers, partnership or acquisition activities, competitive analysis, and cost‑out initiatives.
  • Mentor and develop team members such as biology technicians and interns.
Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in Weed Science preferred or a related field (agronomy, soil science, etc.) required.
  • Experience in sports/commercial turf, golf turfgrass maintenance, or academic research/extension program.
  • Proven ability to design and lead research programs addressing specific questions and solving practical problems.
  • Strong knowledge of turfgrass cultural practices, chemistry, conversions, and mathematics.
  • Experience with statistical analysis software such as ARM, MiniTab, JMP, or similar.
  • High degree of original thinking, intellectual curiosity, and strong communication skills.
  • Ability to develop research protocols that optimize holistic solutions for homeowners across product categories.
  • Willingness to work in a hands‑on scientific team and lead mentorship.
Salary

Starting budgeted pay range: $77,200.00 - $90,800.00 per year, with adjustments based on experience and location. For remote candidates in Alaska, California, Colorado, Illinois, New York, Oregon, or Washington state, required pay thresholds will be applied.
