What is an internship web accessibility?

Internship Web Accessibility positions are entry-level roles designed for students or recent graduates interested in making websites and digital content accessible to people with disabilities. Interns in these positions learn about web accessibility standards, such as the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG), and assist teams in testing and improving the accessibility of websites and apps. The role often includes tasks like auditing web pages, creating accessible content, and suggesting improvements. It's a great way to gain hands-on experience in inclusive design and the technical aspects of web development.

What types of projects and tasks can I expect to work on during a web accessibility internship?

As a Web Accessibility Intern, you will typically assist with evaluating websites and digital products for accessibility compliance using tools and manual testing methods. Your daily tasks may include identifying accessibility barriers, documenting issues, collaborating with developers and designers to implement solutions, and learning about standards such as WCAG. Interns often participate in team meetings, contribute to accessibility audits, and may help create educational materials or resources for staff. This hands-on experience provides valuable insight into both technical and user-centered aspects of digital accessibility.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an internship web accessibility specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive in an Internship Web Accessibility role, you need a foundational understanding of HTML, CSS, and web accessibility standards such as WCAG, often supported by coursework or certifications in accessibility. Familiarity with assistive technologies, accessibility testing tools like Axe or WAVE, and content management systems is typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication help interns collaborate with developers and advocate for accessible design. These skills and qualities ensure digital products are usable for all, comply with legal requirements, and provide a positive user experience.
