Internship Video Game Internships information

What are video game internships?

Video game internships are short-term opportunities, often for students or recent graduates, to gain hands-on experience in the video game industry. Interns may work in areas such as game design, programming, art, animation, quality assurance, or marketing. These internships typically provide mentorship, the chance to work on real projects, and valuable industry connections. They are a great way to build a portfolio and learn about game development from professionals.

What types of projects do interns typically work on during a video game internship?

During a video game internship, interns often contribute to real game development projects under the guidance of experienced team members. Typical responsibilities can include assisting with coding, testing gameplay features, creating digital assets, or even helping with level design and quality assurance. Interns usually collaborate closely with designers, artists, and programmers, gaining hands-on experience in a professional studio environment. These assignments help interns understand the full game development cycle and build a strong portfolio for future career opportunities.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a video game intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Video Game Intern, you generally need foundational knowledge in game design or development, programming languages (such as C++ or Unity), and an educational background in computer science, art, or related fields. Familiarity with game engines, version control systems like Git, and basic 3D modeling or animation tools is typically expected. Creativity, teamwork, and a strong willingness to learn are vital soft skills that help interns stand out. These skills and qualities enable interns to contribute effectively, adapt quickly, and gain valuable experience in the collaborative and fast-evolving gaming industry.

Job description

The Norfolk Admirals are seeking two motivated, driven, and passionate students for our Videography Internship during the 2026-27 Norfolk Admirals Hockey Season. These interns will report directly to the Admirals' Broadcast and Content Coordinator, and will be a crucial part of our game-day video and editing team. The internship will begin in October 2026 and will conclude in April-May 2027 (official conclusion varies on account of end-of-season unpredictability). The ideal candidate has prior experience with filming live sports, an understanding of digital platforms and software (listed below), and a willingness to work evenings/nights determined by the Admirals' home schedule, to include weekends and occasional holidays.
Responsibilities:
  • Film all live hockey action during Norfolk Admirals home games for use in-house, on broadcasts, social media, promotional materials, and other internal content.
  • Assist in producing hype videos and other creative visual content to energize the fan base.
    • Edit and organize game footage in real-time to generate social media content during games.
  • Post in-game highlights and clips to Admirals social media platforms promptly and accurately.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Broadcasting and Hockey Communications and other team departments to ensure consistent, high-quality content.

Qualifications:
  • Experience filming live sports (hockey experience strongly preferred).
  • Ability to edit video quickly and efficiently under tight deadlines.
  • Familiarity with all major social media platforms (Instagram, X/ Twitter, Facebook, TikTok).
  • Proficient in Adobe Creative Suite, especially Premiere Pro, After Effects, and Audition.
  • Strong understanding and passion for hockey.
  • Reliable, with excellent technical, time management, and communication skills.
  • Available to work evenings and weekends during the Admirals' home schedule.
  • Able to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment and take initiative.
  • Willingness to learn, take feedback, and grow as a content creator

We are an equal opportunity employer and all qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, national origin, sex, sexual orientation, age, disability, gender identity, marital or veteran status, or any other protected class.
