Job description

We're looking for a Software Development Engineer II to design and build the systems powering Amazon's next-generation Lists and Collaborative Shopping experiences.
Our team is re-imagining how hundreds of millions of customers curate, discover, and connect through lists. We're applying generative AI to transform Wish Lists, shared lists, gifting, and collaborative shopping into intelligent, personalized experiences on top of Tier-1 systems serving billions of daily requests across every Amazon surface.
You'll work on services that power these experiences and you'll do it during a pivotal moment as we integrate AI-native capabilities into our core framework. This is a role for someone who enjoys end-to-end ownership: diving into ambiguous customer problems, designing distributed systems that scale, writing production code, and measuring customer impact. You'll work across our full stack (back end services, APIs, and integrations with Amazon's shopping ecosystem) and partner closely with product managers, and designers to ship features that customers use every day.
If you're motivated by building systems at massive scale, working with state of the art AI, and shipping customer-facing features that make a visible impact, this team offers all three.
Key job responsibilities
As a Software Development Engineer, you will:
Design, develop, test, and maintain software components and applications that serve hundreds of millions of customers
Troubleshoot and resolve software defects using code reviews, log analysis, metrics evaluation, debugging, and other diagnostic techniques
Write clean, maintainable, and scalable code as part of an agile engineering team
Partner with cross-functional stakeholders to design, develop, test, and launch customer-focused software solutions
Apply computer science and engineering principles to solve complex technical challenges
Drive continuous improvements in testability, operational excellence, and documentation for owned components
Ensure proper data classification, storage, and management in compliance with company policies
About the team
Customers shop everywhere and at any time - whether they're making breakfast, commuting to work, or relaxing at home. They create lists for personal use, share them with friends and family, and use them to discover the millions of products Amazon offers. Lists are essential to helping customers complete their shopping missions and serve as a valuable signal for other Amazon teams, such as Personalization, to enhance product recommendations across the site. Our team is dedicated to finding new and contextually relevant opportunities to integrate List functionality, continuously improving the shopping experience for our customers.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- 3+ years of non-internship professional software development experience
- 3+ years of non-internship design or architecture (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience
- Experience programming with at least one software programming language
- Bachelor's degree in computer science or equivalent
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience with common front-end technologies such as HTML, CSS, JS, TypeScript, and Node
- Experience with NodeJS, and modern JavaScript frameworks such as React, Redux, Ractive, Ember, or Angular, along with the knowledge of when to use them
- Proficiency in Java development using Spring/Guice MVC frameworks and Coral service development
- Familiarity with event-driven architectures and asynchronous message processing
- Understanding of data privacy compliance requirements (GDPR, DSAR) and implementing data deletion workflows
- Knowledge of CI/CD pipelines, operational excellence practices, and monitoring/alerting systems
