Job description

Welcome to the Agentic Commerce Era

At Commerce, our mission is to empower businesses to innovate, grow, and thrive with our open, AI-driven commerce ecosystem. As the parent company of BigCommerce, Feedonomics, and Makeswift, we connect the tools and systems that power growth, enabling businesses to unlock the full potential of their data, deliver seamless and personalized experiences across every channel, and adapt swiftly to an ever-changing market. Simply said, we help businesses confidently solve complex commerce challenges so they can build smarter, adapt faster, and grow on their own terms. If you want to be part of a team of bold builders, sharp thinkers, and technical trailblazers, working together to shape the future of commerce, this is the place for you.

At Makeswift we're on a mission to build the best tool for creative minds to bring their ideas to the world. The concept is simple: combine the experience of a buttery-smooth, elegant design tool with the infrastructure required to go to production.

Instead of mocking up static images and prototypes, build production-ready websites out of live components. Growing team? Version control and real-time collaboration. Working with React engineers? Reuse their work by integrating existing components directly into Makeswift. Our vision is to open up our APIs and foster a component ecosystem that will bridge the gap between developers and designers.

Makeswift is looking for an Intern, Software Engineering to participate in our summer internship program. Makeswift, acquired by Commerce in 2023, is a drag and drop website builder that gives marketers visual freedom and developers full control to design, ship, and scale modern frontends.

As an intern at Makeswift, you'll have an opportunity to learn on the job and experience what it takes to build production systems. You will be in a fast-paced environment and work closely with our engineers to ship software that has real customer impact. It will also be an opportunity to explore what a future full-time role at Makeswift or Commerce would look like.

This role is in-person and ON-SITE in Atlanta, GA.

What You'll Do:

You'll be working with a team that's responsible for Makeswift's infrastructure, APIs, and integrations. Below are some of the projects that you might work on:

  • Contribute to Makeswift's BigCommerce integration, which will be rolled out to tens of thousands of storefronts with billions of dollars in revenue.

  • Expand Makeswift's APIs with MCP servers for Makeswift's or other external AI agents.

  • Instrument Makeswift's backend for improved observability.

  • Set up internal preview environments to make it easier for developers and agents to contribute to Makeswift's codebase and iterate before going to production.

  • Build a CDN to make Makeswift sites more reliable by isolating them from the management API.

Who You Are:Must-Haves
  • Experience with web development either through coursework, personal projects or past internships.

  • Strong proficiency in a programming language.

  • A desire to learn and participate in a fast-paced environment.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Great problem solving and analytical skills.

Nice-to-Haves
  • Experience with TypeScript and JavaScript runtimes (e.g., Node.js, Bun, Deno, etc.).

  • Experience with web development technologies like React and Next.js.

  • Experience with REST, GraphQL, and building APIs.

  • Experience with CI/CD methodologies and related technologies (e.g., GitHub Actions).

  • Experience with cloud infrastructure providers like GCP, Vercel, and Cloudflare.

This position is in-person and ON-SITE in Atlanta, GA.

Hiring Process

We focus our hiring process on understanding your problem-solving and analytical skills. We also look for a strong cultural fit. We don't do LeetCode, but we might give you a take-home assignment so you can showcase your technical skills. At a high level, the process might look like this:

  • Recruiter phone screen

  • Hiring manager screen

  • Take-home assignment

  • Technical interview (assignment follow-up)

  • Final stage (cultural interview)
