Job description

Overview

Yale New Haven Hospital has positions available for certified or certification eligible phlebotomists in outpatient settings. The outreach phlebotomy positions are not union positions.  As a member of our Laboratory Medicine team, you will get to work with some of the leading experts in several specialty fields every day. Responsibilities
  • Understands and adheres to Performance Standards, Policies and Behaviors.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and adhere to laboratory and hospital policies and procedures.
  • Participates in activities that demonstrate professionalism, a commitment to competency and career growth.
  • Follow all established specimen collection policies as defined by the Hospital.
  • Perform blood culture collections using proper antiseptic techniques.
  • Perform EKGs and collect nasal swabs, if required in the draw station location.
  • Ability to communicate directions to patients for collection of certain urine and stool samples.
  • Follow universal precaution standards for each venipuncture, EKG or nasal swab collection 100% of the time.
  • Recognize the signs and symptoms associated with an adverse reaction to a venipuncture and follow proper protocols to maintain patient safety.
  • Need to be able to perform patient registration accurately, including transcribing orders from physician’s offices.
  • Package and transport all samples to performing laboratory correctly following laboratory procedures.
  • If required, obtains an ABN (Advanced Beneficiary Notice) for patient, and provides a financial explanation regarding the form to the patient and scans the form into EMR.
  • Responsible to maintain the sample integrity from the point of obtaining the sample, through the transportation and receipt in the laboratory.
  • Performs other duties as assigned to assure efficient operations of department.

Qualifications

Education: High school diploma or GED required. Completion of an approved Phlebotomy certification course or equivalent experience with on-the-job training.

EXPERIENCE: A minimum of one (1) year of current phlebotomy experience OR successful completion of an accredited phlebotomy program and internship. Two (2) to three (3) years' work experience in a customer service environment, preferably in hospital/physician office with patient interaction.
