Job description

Data Center Design Engineer

Location: Calgary, Alberta

Position Overview

A growing energy developer is seeking a highly specialized Data Center Design Engineer to support the design and development of data center projects as part of its broader power generation and infrastructure strategy.

This role will focus on designing data center facilities that meet the unique requirements of hyperscale customers, cloud providers, technology companies, AI and high-performance computing organizations, enterprise users, and other customers with demanding compute needs.

The successful candidate will have direct experience designing data center projects and a strong understanding of how to translate customer requirements into reliable, scalable, and high-availability infrastructure. This includes power systems, equipment layouts, cooling, redundancy, resiliency, uptime, and long-term operational performance.

This is a design-focused engineering role. The Data Center Design Engineer will serve as the organization's technical subject matter expert and collaborate closely with business development, project development, electrical engineering, power generation, vendors, consultants, and customers throughout the project lifecycle.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and support the development of customer-specific data center projects.
  • Collaborate with internal teams and prospective customers to understand project requirements, including compute load, power demand, equipment needs, redundancy, cooling, reliability, and uptime expectations.
  • Translate customer requirements into practical design concepts, technical specifications, and engineered solutions.
  • Support the design of mission-critical data center infrastructure, including electrical systems, power distribution, backup power, UPS systems, switchgear, transformers, cooling systems, controls, monitoring, and related facility systems.
  • Ensure designs prioritize high availability, resiliency, reliability, and minimal downtime.
  • Evaluate and recommend appropriate equipment, layouts, and system architectures to meet customer requirements.
  • Work closely with power generation and project development teams to align data center opportunities with available or planned power capacity.
  • Participate in technical discussions with prospective customers evaluating data center development opportunities in Canada.
  • Partner with the Business Development team as the technical expert during customer meetings, feasibility evaluations, and early-stage project planning.
  • Review engineering drawings, specifications, vendor proposals, design documents, technical studies, and project requirements.
  • Coordinate with external consultants, engineering firms, contractors, vendors, utilities, and other project stakeholders.
  • Support feasibility studies, budgeting, technical risk assessments, procurement planning, permitting activities, commissioning planning, and project execution.
  • Help ensure projects are designed appropriately from the outset to support long-term operational reliability and performance.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
  • Direct experience designing data center facilities.
  • Strong understanding of mission-critical facility design, data center infrastructure, power systems, cooling, redundancy, reliability, and uptime requirements.
  • Experience supporting customer-driven data center projects with varying technical and operational requirements.
  • Ability to review and interpret engineering drawings, technical specifications, equipment layouts, vendor documentation, and complete design packages.
  • Strong understanding of how power availability, facility design, equipment selection, and reliability requirements integrate within a data center environment.
  • Ability to work effectively with customers, consultants, vendors, contractors, utilities, and multidisciplinary engineering teams.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to explain complex technical concepts to both engineering and commercial stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with hyperscale, colocation, cloud, enterprise, AI, or high-density data center projects.
  • Experience designing facilities with Tier III, Tier IV, or other high-availability and redundancy requirements.
  • Knowledge of UPS systems, switchgear, transformers, generators, backup power systems, cooling infrastructure, monitoring systems, and electrical distribution.
  • Experience supporting early-stage feasibility studies, customer requirements gathering, design development, and project execution.
  • Exposure to power generation, onsite generation, utility interconnection, or large-load electrical infrastructure is considered an asset.
  • P.Eng. designation or eligibility for professional registration in Alberta is preferred.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate is an experienced data center design professional with a proven track record of designing facilities around complex customer requirements. They possess strong technical expertise, commercial awareness, and the ability to contribute during the earliest stages of project development, where customer needs, infrastructure requirements, and project scope are being defined.

This individual enjoys working in a collaborative environment, partnering with business development, engineering, and project teams to deliver reliable, scalable, and mission-critical data center solutions.
