Internship Supercomputer information

What is an internship in supercomputing?

An internship in supercomputing is a temporary position that allows students or early-career professionals to gain hands-on experience working with high-performance computing (HPC) systems, often referred to as supercomputers. Interns typically assist with research projects, software development, data analysis, or system administration in environments where advanced computational resources are used. These internships provide valuable exposure to cutting-edge technology and can help participants build skills relevant to careers in scientific computing, engineering, or data science.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a supercomputer intern?

To thrive as a Supercomputer Intern, you generally need a background in computer science, mathematics, or engineering, with strong programming skills in languages such as Python, C++, or Fortran. Familiarity with high-performance computing (HPC) environments, parallel computing frameworks (e.g., MPI, OpenMP), and Linux operating systems is typically required. Analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication skills help interns collaborate and adapt in research-driven teams. These competencies are crucial for contributing to complex computational projects and maximizing the potential of supercomputing resources.

What are some common projects or tasks that a supercomputer intern might be assigned?

As a supercomputing intern, you may be involved in a range of tasks such as benchmarking system performance, optimizing code for parallel computing, assisting with software installations, or supporting research teams running large-scale simulations. Interns often collaborate closely with system administrators, researchers, and software engineers to troubleshoot issues and improve workflow efficiency. This hands-on experience is invaluable for building technical skills and understanding the collaborative nature of high-performance computing environments.

What is the difference between Internship Supercomputer vs Supercomputer Engineer?

AspectInternship SupercomputerSupercomputer Engineer
Required CredentialsTypically pursuing or recent graduate in Computer Science or related fieldBachelor's or Master's in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related

Job description

ADVANCE YOUR CAREER. ADVANCE THE WORLD.

At AMD, we believe technology can change lives for the better. It can heal us, entertain us, and make us more connected, productive, and understanding of the world around us. And we're looking for talent who feel the same: people who want to leave the planet better than they found it, those who don't shy away from humanity's challenges but are determined to help solve them.

AMD is powering the next generation of supercomputing, high-performance computing, cloud, and AI. Whether you're designing next-gen processors, enabling AI breakthroughs, or creating go-to-market plans, every role at AMD contributes to something bigger - technology that moves the world forward.

Responsibilities

THE ROLE:

The Data Accelerator (DACC) team at AMD is seeking a Design Verification Engineer to join our IP verification team. This role is an excellent opportunity for an early-career engineer to work on next generation technologies that are part of AMD's products powering Servers, Datacenters, Client and Embedded markets. You will join one of the fastest-growing areas of adding custom hardware offload engines to support complex operations like encryption, authentication, compression, GPU/CPU compute offloads & virtual machines live migration. This is a tremendous opportunity to get in early into the rapidly expanding domain of custom hardware accelerators. The Design Verification (DV) group within this team is responsible for developing a scalable DV flow and environment with emphasis on automation (including AI-assisted verification), power and performance verification (PPV) and emulation support. You will work closely with senior engineers who will mentor your growth. Our management fosters continuous technical innovation and career development.

THE PERSON:

Motivated engineer with a foundation in ASIC functional verification concepts, eager to build hands-on skills in advanced verification techniques and planning. This candidate enjoys an environment where everyone in the team can grow and develop with a sense of a global team spirit. Strong analytical thinking and problem-solving skills, excellent attention to detail, and a strong desire to learn from experienced verification engineers.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop and maintain block level IP verification testbenches, test methodology and infrastructure, with guidance from senior team members
  • Develop detailed test plans for covering new features, under the direction of a lead or senior engineer
  • Triage regressions, debug simulations, and analyze coverage; escalate and collaborate with design, verification and other teams to help achieve verification closure
  • Deploy industry leading verification methodologies such as UVM, formal verification etc.
  • Take ownership of assigned features within a block, with support from senior engineers on end-to-end planning
  • Reproduce silicon functional bugs in simulations and/or formal verification tools
  • Conduct and participate in code reviews

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

  • Hands-on hardware verification experience (at-least one tapeout, internship or co-op)
  • Proficient in Verilog, System Verilog, UVM and working in Linux and Windows environments
  • Curiosity about applying AI agents and skills to functional verification tasks
  • Excellent programming skills
  • Familiarity with Makefiles, scripting languages like perl, python, ruby etc.

DESIREABLE EXPERIENCE - AI/ML FOR VERIFICATION:

  • Exposure to using AI coding assistants (e.g., Copilot, Claude, ChatGPT) to help write or debug SystemVerilog/UVM testbench code
  • Interest in learning how AI-based tools can speed up test plan generation, log/waveform triage, or coverage analysis
  • Basic familiarity with Python-based scripting for data analysis or automation (e.g. regex-based log parsing)

ACADEMIC CREDENTIALS:

  • Bachelors or Masters degree in Computer or Electrical Engineering
