Internship Structural Bim Modeler information

What is the difference between Internship Structural Bim Modeler vs Structural Engineer Intern?

AspectInternship Structural Bim ModelerStructural Engineer Intern
Required CredentialsBasic knowledge of BIM software, some coursework in structural designEnrolled in or recent graduate of civil or structural engineering program
Work EnvironmentDesign offices, BIM software labs, collaborative project teamsConstruction sites, design offices, project meetings
Industry UsagePrimarily focused on 3D modeling, BIM coordination, and draftingStructural analysis, design calculations, and project planning

Internship Structural Bim Modelers typically focus on creating and managing 3D models using BIM software, supporting design coordination. Structural Engineer Interns work on analysis, calculations, and structural design tasks. Both roles are essential in the construction industry but differ in technical focus and daily responsibilities.

What does an internship structural BIM modeler do?

An Internship Structural BIM Modeler assists in creating and managing digital models of building structures using Building Information Modeling (BIM) software, such as Revit or Tekla. They work under the supervision of experienced engineers or modelers to produce accurate structural drawings, coordinate with other design disciplines, and update models based on project changes. This internship provides hands-on experience and helps students or recent graduates develop technical skills required for a career in structural engineering and BIM.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an internship structural BIM modeler?

To thrive as an Internship Structural BIM Modeler, you need foundational knowledge in structural engineering principles, basic proficiency with BIM concepts, and typically a relevant engineering or architecture education. Familiarity with software such as Autodesk Revit, AutoCAD, and exposure to BIM collaboration platforms are commonly required. Attention to detail, teamwork, and strong communication skills help interns effectively coordinate with multidisciplinary teams and adapt to complex project demands. These abilities are crucial for producing accurate models, ensuring design integrity, and supporting efficient project workflows in the construction industry.

What are some common challenges faced by an internship structural BIM modeler, and how can they be addressed?

As an Internship Structural BIM Modeler, you may encounter challenges such as adapting to specific BIM software standards, understanding project workflows, and ensuring coordination with other disciplines like architecture and MEP. It's common to initially struggle with the complexity of large models and the importance of maintaining accurate, up-to-date documentation. These challenges can be addressed by actively seeking feedback from senior modelers, participating in team coordination meetings, and taking advantage of available training resources to improve your proficiency with BIM tools and collaborative processes.

Job description

The Structural Technical Modeler is a top-level drafter/technician (non-supervisory level), and is responsible for preparation of construction documents for BIM drawings and details on a variety of projects that range vastly in scale, detail, and complexity. A Structural Technical Modeler should be able to rapidly develop structural building information models (BIMs), annotate plans and details, create three- dimensional renderings, rationalize geometry for appropriate structural schemes, and assist with creating structural narratives. Works closely with design originator, project managers and team of engineers and modelers; may recommend minor design changes requiring sound judgment and discretion. May guide or be assisted by lower-level technicians Performs non-routine and complex assignments from verbal instructions and under minimal supervision.

  • Coordinates all BIM activities with project manager, designers, and engineers
  • Interacts with clients and team members regarding project models
  • Uses latest tools/digital workflows to efficiently create and maintain BIM information and to interoperate with analysis, documentation, fabrication, and construction models
  • Assists in the development of structural detailing in documentation models
  • Works with Project Manager to establish de-adlines to stop internal work prior to plotting deadline to ensure time is left to check quality and accuracy of deliverables
  • Assists in preparing and annotating structural details
  • Uses tools in support of project-specific digital implementation
  • Periodically checks model content for accuracy, consistency, and adherence to graphic and modeling standards
  • Properly organizes structural and reference models
  • Archives various deliverables, models, and databases at key milestones
  • Updates and maintains related project documentation (OneNote, BIM execution plans, sheet lists, etc.)
  • Knows the various types of structural elements and materials used in the BIMs and deliverables
  • Works towards understanding key structural systems, their components, and typical layout/geometry/dimensions associated with them
  • Works with senior engineers to learn detailing conventions for commonly encountered conditions (cladding support, etc.) and project-specific details (parking ramps, arena vomitories/seating units, medical equipment support)
  • Supports company-wide efforts to build effective relationships with employees, clients, industry partners, community stakeholders, and vendors in a way that reflects and supports company core values and meets or exceeds expectations
  • Acts as a culture ambassador, modeling professional behavior and supporting employee development and training initiatives
  • Consistently strives to achieve positive results, in a timely and efficient manner

  • Associate’s degree or certificate in Drafting Design preferred
  • 3 minimum years of progressive drafting experience
  • Excellent written and verbal communication
  • Advanced knowledge and experience in Revit, Tekla, and AutoCAD, with Rhino preferred
