Internship Structural Bim Modeler information

What does an internship structural BIM modeler do?

An Internship Structural BIM Modeler assists in creating and managing digital models of building structures using Building Information Modeling (BIM) software, such as Revit or Tekla. They work under the supervision of experienced engineers or modelers to produce accurate structural drawings, coordinate with other design disciplines, and update models based on project changes. This internship provides hands-on experience and helps students or recent graduates develop technical skills required for a career in structural engineering and BIM.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an internship structural BIM modeler?

To thrive as an Internship Structural BIM Modeler, you need foundational knowledge in structural engineering principles, basic proficiency with BIM concepts, and typically a relevant engineering or architecture education. Familiarity with software such as Autodesk Revit, AutoCAD, and exposure to BIM collaboration platforms are commonly required. Attention to detail, teamwork, and strong communication skills help interns effectively coordinate with multidisciplinary teams and adapt to complex project demands. These abilities are crucial for producing accurate models, ensuring design integrity, and supporting efficient project workflows in the construction industry.

What are some common challenges faced by an internship structural BIM modeler, and how can they be addressed?

As an Internship Structural BIM Modeler, you may encounter challenges such as adapting to specific BIM software standards, understanding project workflows, and ensuring coordination with other disciplines like architecture and MEP. It's common to initially struggle with the complexity of large models and the importance of maintaining accurate, up-to-date documentation. These challenges can be addressed by actively seeking feedback from senior modelers, participating in team coordination meetings, and taking advantage of available training resources to improve your proficiency with BIM tools and collaborative processes.

What is the difference between Internship Structural Bim Modeler vs Structural Engineer Intern?

AspectInternship Structural Bim ModelerStructural Engineer Intern
Required CredentialsBasic knowledge of BIM software, some coursework in structural designEnrolled in or recent graduate of civil or structural engineering program
Work EnvironmentDesign offices, BIM software labs, collaborative project teamsConstruction sites, design offices, project meetings
Industry UsagePrimarily focused on 3D modeling, BIM coordination, and draftingStructural analysis, design calculations, and project planning

Internship Structural Bim Modelers typically focus on creating and managing 3D models using BIM software, supporting design coordination. Structural Engineer Interns work on analysis, calculations, and structural design tasks. Both roles are essential in the construction industry but differ in technical focus and daily responsibilities.

Job description

Senior BIM/VDC Modeler, Self-Perform Construction

El Dorado Hills, CA

At Roebbelen, we build projects twice: first in the model, then in the field.

We're looking for an experienced BIM/VDC Modeler to help turn construction plans into accurate, buildable models that support our project teams and self-perform operations. While this role will have a strong focus on carpentry-related scopes, we welcome candidates with backgrounds in architectural detailing, structural modeling, framing, concrete, prefabrication, or other construction-related modeling disciplines.

You do not need experience in every scope listed below. We're looking for someone with strong Revit skills, practical construction knowledge, and an interest in helping field teams build more efficiently.

What You'll Do

  • Develop detailed, construction-ready models for framing, formwork, reinforcing steel, embeds, anchors, and related building systems
  • Create drawings, schedules, quantities, and detailing packages that support field installation
  • Coordinate modeled scopes with project teams, trade partners, and design professionals
  • Identify constructability issues before they affect field production
  • Support prefabrication, panelization, and model-based layout workflows
  • Collaborate with superintendents and craft professionals to ensure models reflect actual field conditions and sequencing
  • Participate in field visits to validate model accuracy and incorporate lessons learned
  • Help improve BIM standards, workflows, and modeling practices
  • Serve as a resource and mentor for other BIM team members

What We're Looking For

  • Five or more years of experience in BIM, VDC, drafting, detailing, construction technology, or a related field
  • Advanced proficiency with Autodesk Revit
  • Strong understanding of construction documents, specifications, and building systems
  • Experience creating detailed models that support coordination, fabrication, or field installation
  • Ability to translate construction requirements into practical digital solutions
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills

Experience with Autodesk Construction Cloud, Revizto, or similar coordination platforms is helpful but not required.

Experience That Could Help You Succeed

You may bring experience in one or more of the following areas:

  • Wood or metal stud framing
  • Architectural or structural detailing
  • Concrete formwork or reinforcing steel
  • Self-perform construction
  • Prefabrication or panelized construction
  • Revit family development
  • Material takeoffs and fabrication schedules
  • Field layout or total station workflows
  • Construction sequencing and logistics

You do not need to check every box. If you have strong modeling skills and understand how construction comes together in the field, we encourage you to apply.

What Success Looks Like

In this role, you'll help project teams:

  • Improve coordination and constructability
  • Reduce field conflicts and rework
  • Strengthen prefabrication and layout workflows
  • Produce accurate, field-ready information
  • Build more safely and efficiently

Why Roebbelen?

Since 1959, Roebbelen has delivered complex projects through collaboration, innovation, and craftsmanship. We're continuing to invest in construction technology and in professionals who can connect digital modeling with real-world construction.

You'll work directly with project teams, field leaders, and self-perform crews, giving you the opportunity to see your work influence how projects are actually built.

If you're passionate about construction technology and creating models that make a measurable difference in the field, we'd love to hear from you.
