Job description

Field Service Technician, Solar and Battery Storage

Redwood Materials is seeking an experienced Field Service Electrician to provide specialized electrical support across our growing solar and battery storage projects. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys working hands-on in the field, solving problems independently, and helping build processes in a fast-moving startup environment.

In this position, you will travel regularly to support active sites, manage daily work requests, perform electrical system checks, and complete maintenance and repair activities with minimal oversight. The role will initially focus on local Reno-area support, with travel expected to increase as new projects launch across additional locations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Troubleshoot and perform routine maintenance and inspections of solar panels, inverters, battery storage units, and associated electrical systems.
  • Install, test, and commission electrical equipment for solar and battery system projects.
  • Operate specialized tools and diagnostic equipment for electrical installations and repairs.
  • Manage field-based electrical projects and oversee contractors and third-party work.
  • Create and implement standard work instructions (SWIs) for electrical field service tasks.
  • Complete daily task lists and respond to field service work requests.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with operations, engineering, and EHS teams to implement process improvements.
  • Identify and mitigate safety hazards, particularly in high-voltage battery environments.
  • Maintain high standards for quality and safety while working independently

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated expertise (at least 4 years of experience) in electrical troubleshooting, repair, and maintenance of solar and battery storage systems; strong technical skills, attention to quality, and ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently. Utility scale and medium-voltage experience is a plus.
  • Ability to independently troubleshoot and repair electrical systems in remote field locations using appropriate tools and diagnostic equipment.
  • Valid relevant certifications (e.g., NABCEP for solar systems, OSHA 10/30, or NFPA 70E)
  • Proficiency with tools, diagnostic equipment, computers and field service documentation.
  • Physical ability to lift/carry up to 50 lbs., climb, bend, and perform tasks in varied field environments.
  • Ability to travel for up to 1 to 2 weeks at a time at short notice and flexibility to work on nights, weekends and/or overtime to meet critical timelines.
  • Valid driver's license, clean driving record, and compliant government issued identification for domestic air travel.
  • Thrive in dynamic outdoor and variable-temperature field conditions.
