Job description

Who we are
Founded in 1923, W. W. Norton is the oldest and largest independent and employee-owned publishing house, publishing works of Nobel laureates, master teachers, and Pulitzer Prize winners. For over a century, Norton has been dedicated to achieving a common goal: to bring to readers and students enduring fiction, nonfiction, and poetry, as well as high-quality textbooks and digital learning tools.
About the internship
W. W. Norton is looking for interns to participate in our twelve-week internship program. Our internship program provides participants with an engaging, supportive, and hands-on learning experience in publishing that includes educational lunch sessions and networking within the intern class.
The High School team has two intern spots available: one focused on print editorial work, and one focused on media editorial work. If you have a preference for one of the internships, please include that in your cover letter.
The High School team adapts select textbooks from the college discipline teams for the high school market and creates high-school specific media to accompany them. Your work if you become a Norton intern with the High School team may include the following:
  • Reading manuscripts and proofs at various stages of publication for the 2027 and 2028 front lists, assisting editors and authors in improving the quality of print and media content
  • Compiling materials and preparing manuscripts for reviews and production
  • Learning the basics of copyediting and proofreading
  • Tracking author submissions for ancillaries and digital media such as Instructor Manuals, Test Banks, and Course-Planning and Pacing Guides - organizing uploaded manuscript, keeping projects on schedule
  • Testing digital products to ensure a quality user experience for high school students and instructors
  • Assist with survey data to assess teacher and student needs
  • Assist with organizing high school specific data and administrative tasks as needed
  • Weekly progress check-ins with intern manager
  • Working with associate editors to complete additional projects as needed

Experience and Skills
Why you'll be a great fit
We are excited to add interns who bring diverse perspectives to Norton. The ideal candidate is curious, hardworking, and eager to learn more about the different facets of publishing. Here are some skills and qualities we look for in candidates:
  • You are a college junior, senior, recent graduate, or someone looking to make a career change.
  • You are eager to improve your verbal and written communication skills.
  • You enjoy collaborating and working in a group to solve challenges.
  • You have a passion for learning and ideas.
  • You have experience working with students as a tutor or teaching assistant.
  • You have a working knowledge of Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, Outlook).

Internship details
  • Interns are paid $17 per hour, subject to applicable law, and work a maximum of 20 hours weekly.
  • Internship period is twelve weeks from 9/14/2026-12/4/2026
  • Our workday is 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Eastern Time; specific work hours are flexible to accommodate an intern's schedule.
  • For interns who reside within commuting distance of the office, this internship will be in-person in our Manhattan offices; those in other locations will work remotely.
  • Eligibility to work with W.W. Norton & Company in the US is required.

If you are interested in applying, please submit your resume and cover letter to both Katelyn Taylor (ktaylor@wwnorton.com) and Ailyn Del Rio (adelrio@wwnorton.com) no later than August 14, 2026. Applications will be considered on a rolling basis, and if enough applications are received, this listing may close early. Once you have submitted your application, please refrain from sending additional follow-up emails, as these will only delay the hiring manager's ability to read the applications received. Final hiring decisions will be made by 9/1/2026, so if you do not hear from us by then, you can assume the internship has been filled by a different applicant. You must follow these submission instructions in order to be considered for the internship.
* Your cover letter should be original and not AI-generated; we are interested in your authentic voice!
