Job description

Are you a Software Developer who thrives on solving complex problems and building technology that makes a real-world impact? Emerson has an exciting opportunity for you.

We are looking for innovative, entrepreneurial engineers who are passionate about their craft and committed to continuous growth. Based in Austin, Texas, you will join a collaborative, diverse community and work as an integral member of a cross-functional Agile team focused on the development of Emerson's PACSystems technologies.

PACSystems is trusted by leading companies across discrete and hybrid manufacturing industries to safely and reliably control critical processes. In this role, you will be focused on the client-side software that engineers and operators rely on every day, building applications used to configure, program, visualize, and manage PACSystems controllers and automation solutions. Your work will directly shape the experience of the engineers and operators who depend on these tools in demanding industrial environments.

You will contribute to the design and development of next-generation PACSystems software capabilities. Our team embraces modern development practices, including AI-assisted and spec-driven development methodologies, where structured specifications and intelligent tooling are used to accelerate delivery, improve quality, and reduce ambiguity. We are actively investing in these approaches and are looking for developers who are curious about and energized by what AI-enabled workflows can unlock in industrial software development.

You will be part of an organization led by leaders who are deeply committed to technical excellence, Agile principles, and building an environment where engineers do their best work. If you are looking for a role that is technically challenging, forward-thinking, and built to have lasting real-world impact, we want to hear from you.

IN THIS ROLE, YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES WILL:

  • Collaborate -Foster a creative atmosphere, review and provide detailed feedback on peers' design and code, and actively participate in Agile activities such as sprint planning and retrospectives. Engage in Hackathons, Tech Talks, and Communities of Practice with like-minded engineers.
  • Partner with Domain Experts -Work closely with product managers and subject matter experts in industrial automation to deeply understand domain requirements and translate complex domain knowledge into precise, actionable software specifications.
  • Define and Drive Specifications -Author and refine structured software specifications using modern spec-driven approaches.
  • Innovate -Develop software using the latest tools, frameworks, and AI-assisted development workflows. Apply spec-driven methodologies to accelerate delivery, improve quality, and reduce ambiguity. Debug and validate software on both unreleased products and issues encountered in the field.
  • Iterate -Help the scrum team continuously improve its processes, tools, and ways of working, including the adoption and refinement of AI-enabled development practices.
  • Tech Savvy -Stay current on emerging technologies, AI development tooling, and spec-driven methodologies, and actively look for ways to apply them to real problems.
  • Always Curious -Take time to ask questions, challenge assumptions, and define the problem before diving into solutions. Make learning a continuous priority.
  • Team Obsessed -Engage in collaborative planning, support your teammates' growth, and hold yourself and others accountable to delivering results.

WHO YOU ARE: You anticipate the impact of emerging technologies and make necessary adjustments. You effectively communicate in various settings: one-on-one, small and large groups, or among diverse styles and position levels. You deal comfortably with the uncertainty of change. You create teamwork allowing others across the organization to achieve shared objectives.

FOR THIS ROLE, YOU WILL NEED:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related STEM discipline with 7+ years of relevant software development experience, OR

  • Master's degree in a related field with 6+ years of relevant experience

  • Proven experience designing and developing client-side software applications using JavaScript, Python, C#, C++, or similar languages

  • Experience integrating with or interfacing against real-time systems, embedded controllers, or industrial communication protocols

  • Legal authorization to work in the United States without sponsorship now and in the future
    • Individuals with temporary visas such as E, F-1 (including those with OPT or CPT), H-1, H-2, L-1, B, J or TN, or who need sponsorship for work authorization now or in the future, are not eligible for hire.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS THAT SET YOU APART:

  • Experience developing desktop or web applications in industrial or automation software environments
  • Familiarity with real-time operating systems (LinuxRT or similar), or a working understanding of how real-time system constraints influence client-side software design
  • Experience with AI-assisted and spec-driven development workflows, including the use of structured specification languages such as OpenAPI, Protobuf, GraphQL schemas, or JSON Schema to drive code generation, validation, and AI-assisted implementation
  • Experience with interface definition languages (IDLs), gRPC, or contract-first design approaches for bridging client applications and real-time back-end systems
  • Proficiency in TypeScript, Python, C#, or C++ within spec-driven or AI-enabled development pipelines
  • Demonstrated experience working within Agile or SAFe delivery frameworks
  • Background in the process control or industrial automation industry
