What is an internship robotics?

An Internship Robotics job is a temporary position where students or recent graduates gain hands-on experience in robotics engineering, programming, or research. Interns typically work on projects involving robotics design, automation, AI, or hardware development under the supervision of experienced professionals. This role helps develop technical skills, problem-solving abilities, and industry knowledge, preparing interns for future careers in robotics or related fields.

What types of projects or tasks can I expect to work on during an internship robotics?

As a Robotics Intern, you can expect to be involved in a range of hands-on and theoretical tasks, such as hardware assembly, programming and testing robot behaviors, assisting with system integration, and contributing to research or data collection. You might work closely with experienced engineers and researchers, participating in team meetings, brainstorming sessions, and problem-solving discussions. Interns often get opportunities to use industry-standard tools, gain exposure to the entire development cycle, and take on incremental responsibility as they demonstrate their skills. These experiences are designed to give you practical insights into the field while supporting the ongoing work of the robotics team. This collaborative environment helps interns develop both technical proficiency and valuable professional relationships for their future careers.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in an internship robotics position, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Internship Robotics candidate, you generally need a background in engineering, computer science, or a related field, along with foundational knowledge in robotics principles and programming (e.g., Python, C++, ROS). Familiarity with hardware prototyping tools, simulation environments, and relevant software platforms is often required, and certifications in robotics or embedded systems can be advantageous. Strong problem-solving abilities, teamwork, and effective communication are standout soft skills in this position. These competencies enable interns to successfully contribute to projects, adapt to technical challenges, and collaborate efficiently in multidisciplinary robotics teams.

Job description

At Felix Construction, interns are more than observers-they're contributors. Whether your interests are in Construction Management, Project Engineering, Finance, Human Resources, Marketing, Information Technology, Operations, or another business discipline, you'll gain meaningful, hands-on experience working alongside industry professionals on real projects and initiatives.
Since 1987, Felix has been building critical water and wastewater infrastructure that serves communities across Arizona and Texas. Today, we're a 100% employee-owned company and proud recipient of the 2025 #1 Top Workplace in Arizona and the #2 Top Workplace in the USA for midsize construction companies.
Our internship program is designed to provide students with practical experience, professional mentorship, and exposure to how a growing organization operates. Interns work directly with experienced leaders, contribute to meaningful projects, and develop skills that prepare them for successful careers after graduation.
Whether you're interested in helping build infrastructure, supporting the people and processes behind the work, or exploring where your career interests may lead, you'll leave Felix with real-world experience, professional connections, and a better understanding of how your talents can make an impact.
Felix Construction is seeking motivated and curious students to join our Industrial Controls & Automation team as Industrial Controls Engineering Interns for Summer 2027. This internship provides hands-on experience in electrical control panel design, industrial automation systems, and engineering support within the water and wastewater industry.
As an intern, you will work alongside experienced engineers, designers, and fabricators while gaining exposure to the complete lifecycle of industrial control systems-from design and panel fabrication to testing, commissioning, and field implementation. This role is designed to provide meaningful project experience, technical development, and industry exposure that will help prepare you for a future career in controls engineering.
What You'll Do
During your internship, you will have the opportunity to:
  • Assist with the design of electrical control panels using industry-standard CAD software such as AutoCAD and EPLAN.
  • Support the development of electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, panel layouts, and related design documentation.
  • Learn and apply industry standards and best practices, including UL 508A, National Electrical Code (NEC), and IEC standards.
  • Participate in component selection and support the creation of Bills of Materials (BOMs).
  • Collaborate with engineers on programmable logic controller (PLC) and human-machine interface (HMI) integration projects.
  • Assist with panel testing, quality assurance activities, and troubleshooting efforts.
  • Gain exposure to panel fabrication, assembly, and manufacturing processes within a UL 508A-certified panel shop.
  • Participate in field installations, startup support, and troubleshooting activities as project schedules allow.
  • Document design revisions and support engineering change management processes.
  • Attend project meetings and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including engineering, operations, construction, and field personnel.

Who You Are
Qualifications:
Required
  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • Completed at least one year of college coursework prior to the start of the internship.
  • Strong interest in industrial automation, controls engineering, electrical systems, or manufacturing.
  • Basic understanding of electrical principles and engineering fundamentals.
  • Strong communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment.

Preferred
  • Experience with AutoCAD, EPLAN, SolidWorks Electrical, or similar design software.
  • Familiarity with PLCs, HMIs, industrial networks, or automation systems.
  • Coursework related to controls, instrumentation, power systems, or industrial automation.
  • Previous internship, project, robotics, or hands-on technical experience.

Why Join Felix?
At Felix Construction, our internship program is designed to provide meaningful work experience, professional development, and exposure to career opportunities within a growing employee-owned company. Interns work alongside experienced professionals, contribute to real projects, and gain practical skills that extend far beyond the classroom.
As a Felix Intern, You'll Enjoy:
  • Hands-on experience supporting real projects and business initiatives
  • Mentorship from experienced professionals and company leaders
  • Exposure to multiple departments and career paths within the construction industry
  • Opportunities to network with fellow interns and employee-owners
  • Professional development and learning experiences throughout the summer
  • Competitive internship compensation
  • Housing assistance for eligible out-of-state interns
  • Paid company holidays during the internship program, including Memorial Day and Independence Day
  • Paid Time Off (PTO) accrued at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked
