What is an internship robotics engineer?

An Internship Robotics Engineer job involves assisting in the design, testing, and development of robotic systems. Interns work with engineers to build prototypes, troubleshoot mechanical and software issues, and contribute to research and innovation. They may use programming languages like Python or C++, work with robotics frameworks such as ROS, and collaborate on automation projects. The role provides hands-on experience in engineering principles, problem-solving, and teamwork in a real-world setting.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as an internship robotics engineer?

To thrive as an Internship Robotics Engineer, you need a solid background in robotics, mechanical or electrical engineering, and proficiency in relevant programming languages such as Python, C++, or MATLAB, often supported by ongoing or completed coursework in these areas. Familiarity with industry-standard robotics platforms (e.g., ROS), simulation tools, and CAD software is typically expected, while certifications in robotics or programming can be advantageous. Strong problem-solving abilities, teamwork, and effective communication are key soft skills that help you contribute to and learn from multidisciplinary engineering teams. These qualifications and attributes are essential for navigating technical tasks, collaborating efficiently, and adapting quickly to the fast-paced nature of robotics projects.

What do internship robotics engineers do?

As an Internship Robotics Engineer, you may work on a range of hands-on and software-based tasks such as assembling robot prototypes, developing code for robot control, testing sensor integration, or troubleshooting system errors. Interns are often involved in supporting ongoing research or product development under the guidance of senior engineers, giving them exposure to the entire robotics development cycle. Typical responsibilities may include running simulations, analyzing data, assisting in hardware testing, and documenting results. This role provides an excellent opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world challenges while collaborating closely with engineers from mechanical, electrical, and software backgrounds.

Job description

Our organization in Amazon Robotics builds robots that perform contact-rich manipulation safely and reliably in complex, unstructured environments at Amazon scale. Our scientists and engineers push the boundaries of robotic manipulation to handle unparalleled object diversity with the high level of assurance our customers expect. We learn from real-world data at a scale that few teams in robotics can access.
We are seeking a Software Development Engineer to accelerate a small team advancing reinforcement learning for manipulation. You will drive the software path from a trained policy to reliable execution on real robots, and build the tooling and automation that help the team run and scale experiments. You will create new tools and pipelines while leveraging existing work from adjacent teams to move fast and scale quickly. You will help get learned policies running on hardware, in real time, and turn promising research results into capabilities that run robustly on physical robots. You will join a small team whose mission reaches beyond any single product: to pick and stow billions of items across many future robotics applications.
Key job responsibilities
- Build the tooling and automation the team needs to run and scale experiments, automate evaluation, and move data where it needs to go. Leverage existing solutions where they exist, but develop novel systems when required.
- Partner with scientists to get learned policies running in real time on robot hardware, and help close performance and latency gaps.
- Identify and remove the recurring engineering bottlenecks that slow the team down.
- Write production-quality code and build systems the team can rely on and reuse.
- Partner with teams across simulation, control, hardware, and infrastructure to scale reliably and quickly.
A day in the life

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's degree or foreign equivalent in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field
- 4+ years of non-internship professional software development experience
- 2+ years of non-internship design or architecture (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience
- 3+ years of programming using a modern programming language such as Java, C++, or C#, including object-oriented design experience
- Experience working effectively with science, data processing, and software engineering teams
- Experience building and operating scalable backend systems, services, or data pipelines
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- 3+ years of full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations experience
