Internship Retrieval Augmented Generation information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an intern working with Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG), and why are they important?

To thrive as an intern in Retrieval Augmented Generation, you need a foundational understanding of natural language processing, machine learning concepts, and strong programming skills, often supported by coursework or research in computer science or data science. Familiarity with tools like Python, PyTorch or TensorFlow, and experience with libraries such as Hugging Face Transformers and vector databases are typically required. Strong analytical thinking, curiosity, and effective communication make candidates stand out in collaborative, research-intensive environments. These abilities are critical for developing, evaluating, and improving RAG systems that combine information retrieval with generative models.

What is an internship in Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG)?

An Internship in Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) is a temporary position, typically for students or early-career professionals, focused on developing or researching AI systems that combine information retrieval with generative models. Interns in this field may work on enhancing how AI models find and use external data sources to generate accurate, context-aware responses. This role often involves tasks such as data preprocessing, implementing retrieval algorithms, fine-tuning language models, and evaluating system performance. It offers valuable hands-on experience with cutting-edge AI technologies and frameworks.

What types of projects or tasks can I expect to work on during an internship in Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG)?

As an intern in Retrieval Augmented Generation, you can expect to work on projects that involve integrating information retrieval systems with generative AI models. Typical tasks may include curating and preprocessing data sets, developing or fine-tuning retrieval algorithms, evaluating the performance of RAG pipelines, and collaborating with engineers and researchers to improve end-to-end system accuracy. You may also assist in conducting experiments, analyzing results, and documenting findings, all within a collaborative team environment that values innovation and knowledge sharing.

What is the difference between Internship Retrieval Augmented Generation vs Internship Data Analyst?

AspectInternship Retrieval Augmented GenerationInternship Data Analyst
Required SkillsKnowledge of AI, NLP, retrieval systems, programmingData analysis, statistical skills, Excel, SQL
Work EnvironmentTech companies, AI startups, research labsBusiness, finance, marketing departments
Employer UsageDevelop AI models, improve retrieval systemsAnalyze data trends, generate reports

Internship Retrieval Augmented Generation focuses on developing AI models that combine retrieval systems with language generation, requiring skills in AI and programming. In contrast, an Internship Data Analyst concentrates on analyzing data sets to inform business decisions, emphasizing statistical and analytical skills. Both roles are common in tech and business sectors but serve different functions within organizations.

Job description

Position Summary

The AI Builder is a hands-on delivery role responsible for designing, building, and deploying practical AI agents, copilots, and automated workflows that help Ormat move AI solutions from experimentation to execution. This position partners directly with business users to translate scoped business problems into working solutions that connect to company data, systems, and processes. Success in this role is measured by solutions that are shipped, adopted, reused, and reliably used by employees across Ormat's global operations. This position is part of the AI Center of Excellence team based out of Reno, Nevada. Typical work involves platforms such as Microsoft Power Automate, Copilot Studio, n8n, Make, LangChain, and OpenAI AgentKit.

Essential Functions

  • Design, build, test, and deploy multi-step AI agents, copilots, and automated workflows that solve defined business problems and improve operational efficiency.
  • Work directly with business users to understand workflow needs, prototype solutions quickly, gather feedback, and iterate until solutions are practical and usable.
  • Connect AI solutions to internal data, documents, and platforms, including Microsoft 365, SharePoint, databases, APIs, and other approved business systems.
  • Apply prompt engineering, retrieval-augmented generation concepts, and agent orchestration techniques to create reliable and well-structured AI-enabled workflows.
  • Document solution design, build standards, reusable patterns, handoff notes, and support requirements to enable repeatable delivery and long-term maintainability.
  • Partner with IT, Data, security, and business stakeholders to transition production-ready solutions into appropriate infrastructure, monitoring, governance, and support models.

Other Responsibilities

Perform other duties as assigned. Support internal AI enablement efforts, contribute to reusable solution libraries and standards, participate in AI Leads or cross-functional working groups as needed, and remain current on emerging AI, automation, and productivity tools relevant to Ormat's business environment.

Education, Experience, and Skills Required

  • Demonstrated experience building AI agents, automations, GenAI applications, or workflow-based technical solutions; A portfolio of shipped and adopted solutions matters more than years of experience or job titles.
  • Hands-on fluency with at least one modern agent, automation, or low-code/no-code platform such as Microsoft Power Automate, Copilot Studio, LangChain, OpenAI AgentKit, n8n, Make, or similar tools.
  • Working understanding of prompt engineering, retrieval-augmented generation, agent orchestration, workflow design, and responsible AI practices.
  • Ability to connect technology solutions to business needs, break complex processes into clear steps, and design reliable user-centered workflows.
  • Strong communication skills and comfort working directly with business users, technical partners, and cross-functional stakeholders in a fast-moving environment.
  • Bachelor's degree in information systems, computer science, business analytics, engineering, operations, or a related field preferred; equivalent practical experience may be considered.

Physical Requirements

  • Primarily office-based role requiring the ability to sit or stand for extended periods, use a computer and standard office equipment, communicate verbally and in writing, and attend meetings in person or virtually. Occasional travel between company locations may be required.

This is an opportunity to build practical AI solutions at the intersection of AI, operations, and renewable energy - helping shape how Ormat works and competes in a rapidly evolving industry.
