Job description

Overview
The College of Sciences and Mathematics' (COSAM) Communications and Marketing team is seeking a talented and motivated student writer to help tell the stories of COSAM's faculty, students, alumni, research and programs.
The student writer will create engaging content for print and digital platforms while gaining professional experience in interviewing, reporting, editing and science communication. The ideal candidate will be a strong and curious writer who can translate complex scientific and technical information into clear, compelling stories for audiences that include prospective students, current students, alumni, donors and the general public.
Responsibilities
  • Research, write and edit feature stories, news articles, newsletter content, web copy and other communications materials
  • Interview faculty, staff, students, alumni and other sources to gather information, quotes and story details
  • Translate scientific and technical topics into clear, accessible language while maintaining accuracy
  • Identify potential stories involving COSAM's people, programs, research and community impact
  • Assist with developing content for COSAM publications, websites and digital platforms
  • Proofread and fact-check materials for accuracy, clarity, consistency and adherence to AP style
  • Coordinate with photographers, videographers and other members of the Communications and Marketing team as needed
  • Manage assignments and deadlines while communicating regularly with the Communications and Marketing team
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

Qualifications
  • Current Auburn University student in good academic standing
  • Please submit a cover letter and two to three writing samples, preferably including examples of news, feature or science-related writing as additional documents.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to write clearly, accurately and concisely for different audiences and formats
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to factual accuracy
  • Ability to conduct professional interviews and communicate comfortably with a variety of sources
  • Ability to manage multiple assignments and meet deadlines
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively
  • Willingness to receive and incorporate editorial feedback
  • Coursework or experience in journalism, communications, English, public relations, marketing or a related field
  • Familiarity with AP style
  • Experience writing for a student publication, organization, internship or professional setting
