Internship Remote Structural Engineering information

What is a remote structural engineering internship?

A remote structural engineering internship is a temporary work experience program where students or recent graduates assist structural engineers with designing, analyzing, and inspecting buildings and infrastructure, all while working from a location outside of the traditional office. Interns typically collaborate online with their team, use engineering software, and contribute to real-world projects. These internships help students gain practical experience, industry knowledge, and professional skills without needing to relocate or commute.

What types of projects and tasks can I expect to work on as a remote structural engineering intern?

As a remote structural engineering intern, you will typically assist with tasks such as drafting structural plans using CAD software, performing basic calculations, reviewing design documents, and preparing reports. You may also collaborate with senior engineers in virtual meetings to discuss project requirements and solutions. Remote internships often involve supporting ongoing projects, conducting research, and ensuring that deliverables meet codes and standards. This experience helps you develop practical skills and gain insight into how structural teams operate, even when working remotely.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote structural engineering intern?

To excel as an Internship Remote Structural Engineer, you should have a solid understanding of structural analysis, engineering principles, and be enrolled in or have completed a civil or structural engineering program. Familiarity with technical tools such as AutoCAD, Revit, and structural analysis software like SAP2000 or ETABS is typically expected. Strong communication skills, attention to detail, and self-motivation are particularly valuable for remote collaboration and learning. These skills and qualifications ensure accurate project contributions, effective teamwork in a remote setting, and ongoing professional growth.

About Us

Tate Americas is a key business within Kingspan Data Solutions and is at the forefront of delivering integrated solutions to the rapidly expanding data centre market. We combine engineering expertise, advanced manufacturing and operational excellence to deliver complex, mission-critical projects for some of the world’s largest technology companies.

With significant investment and ambitious growth plans, Tate is evolving beyond traditional manufacturing to become a fully integrated solutions provider, offering customers a seamless delivery model from design and manufacturing through installation, commissioning and final handover.

About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Solutions Engineer with expertise in Data Center Infrastructure and Aisle Containment to develop integrated, customer-specific solutions across our data center infrastructure portfolio, including hot aisle containment, manifolds, integrated air handling unit (AHU), and power stack designs.

This role serves as the technical lead during the pre-order phase of customer opportunities, acting as the key interface between Commercial Teams, Engineering, Manufacturing, and external partners to ensure solutions are technically credible, manufacturable, and commercially viable.

The position works closely with internal and external technical experts including Structural Engineering, R&D, and Manufacturing, coordinating across multiple disciplines to deliver cohesive, integrated solutions aligned to customer requirements, timelines, and constraints.

What You’ll Do

Core Responsibilities

  • Own the project scope, requirements, and business case for customer solutions from concept through handoff.
  • Actively participate in project teams to guide design decisions, ensuring alignment to scope, cost, and performance requirements.
  • Develop customer-specific containment and modular solutions that meet technical, operational, and commercial needs.
  • Support RFQs and quote development, ensuring timely submissions with clearly defined assumptions, risks, and constraints.
  • Partner with estimating to align solution design with cost targets and manufacturability.

Solution & Product Definition

  • Translate customer requirements into integrated solutions spanning containment, cooling, manifolds, and electrical infrastructure.
  • Define solution-level requirements related to performance, structural and code compliance, hybrid cooling environments, and retrofit compatibility.
  • Identify repeatable solution patterns and contribute to standardization and capability evolution.

Cross-Functional Leadership

  • Collaborate closely with Sales, Engineering, Manufacturing, Supply Chain, and R&D to ensure solutions are feasible, scalable, and execution-ready.
  • Coordinate cross-functionally to enable smooth transition from concept to engineered solution.

Go-To-Market & Customer Enablement

  • Support technical messaging, value propositions, and sales enablement materials.
  • Participate in customer presentations, technical discussions, and solution reviews.
  • Act as the voice of the customer, incorporating feedback from sales teams, RFPs/RFIs, field deployments, and market trends.

Continuous Improvement & Compliance

  • Incorporate field and project feedback to improve solution performance, quality, and delivery.
  • Ensure alignment with relevant data center standards, fire protection, seismic, and building codes.
  • Maintain awareness of industry trends such as AI-driven density increases and hybrid cooling strategies.

Key Expectations

  • Strong systems-thinking mindset with balanced technical and commercial acumen.
  • Proven ability to work in a fast-paced, customer-driven, cross-functional environment.
  • Focus on delivering scalable, high-quality solutions that support business growth.

Additional Expectations

  • Remain compliant with the Code of Conduct and Policies which includes the Kingspan Group Compliance Policy.
  • Ensure that all duties related to product compliance are adhered to in accordance with the Product Compliance Policy, Laws, Regulations, and market demands.
  • Responsible for all tasks to achieve compliance goals and demands of the Compliance Management System.
  • Must raise concerns related to the Compliance Management System to their supervisor, manager, or any member of the Leadership Team, or through the confidential whistle blower service.

What You’ll Bring

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, or related); Master’s/MBA preferred.
  • 8+ years’ experience in data center infrastructure solutions, with 5+ years in a customer‑facing Product, Sales Engineer, or Solutions Engineer role.
  • Strong expertise in hot/cold aisle containment, modular data center systems, and thermal management.
  • Proven experience owning product requirements, influencing product roadmaps, and supporting RFQs/RFPs and technical submittals.
  • Ability to lead cross‑functionally, balance standardization vs. customization, and translate customer needs into manufacturable solutions.
  • Strong communication skills with customers, sales teams, and engineering stakeholders.

What You’ll Get

  • Pay range: $90000 USD to $120000 USD. This role is eligible for a discretionary bonus
