Internship Remote Research Engineer information

What is an internship remote research engineer?

Internship Remote Research Engineers are students or recent graduates who work remotely to assist in research and development projects, typically within engineering, technology, or scientific fields. Their responsibilities often include data analysis, literature reviews, software development, and supporting senior researchers in various experiments or projects. These internships provide hands-on experience, allowing interns to apply theoretical knowledge, develop technical skills, and collaborate with professional teams, all while working from a location outside the main office or lab.

How does an internship remote research engineer typically collaborate with team members and supervisors?

As a remote research engineer intern, you'll primarily use digital collaboration tools like Slack, Zoom, and project management platforms to communicate with your team. Regular check-ins, virtual meetings, and shared documentation are crucial for staying aligned on project goals and progress. You'll often work closely with senior engineers, researchers, and sometimes cross-functional teams, receiving guidance and feedback remotely. This setup encourages proactive communication and self-management, helping you develop strong remote work skills that are highly valued in the tech industry.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an internship remote research engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Internship Remote Research Engineer, you need a solid background in computer science or engineering, strong analytical abilities, and relevant coursework or experience in research methodologies. Familiarity with programming languages (such as Python or MATLAB), version control systems (like Git), and data analysis tools is typically required. Strong self-motivation, effective communication, and time management skills help interns excel in remote and collaborative environments. These skills enable effective contribution to research projects, independent problem-solving, and seamless integration with distributed teams.

What is the difference between Internship Remote Research Engineer vs Research Scientist?

AspectInternship Remote Research EngineerResearch Scientist
CredentialsTypically pursuing or holding a relevant degree (e.g., Computer Science, Engineering)Advanced degree (Master's or PhD) often required
Work EnvironmentRemote, internship setting, often part-time or temporaryFull-time, research-focused, may be remote or on-site
Industry UsageCommon in tech, academia, and R&D sectors for entry-level or training rolesResearch and development departments, academia, industry labs

The main difference is that an Internship Remote Research Engineer is an entry-level, temporary position aimed at gaining experience, often held by students or early-career individuals. In contrast, a Research Scientist is a more advanced, permanent role focused on conducting independent research, often requiring higher qualifications and experience.

Job description

About the Role

Anthropic's Infrastructure organization is foundational to our mission of developing AI systems that are reliable, interpretable, and steerable. The systems we build determine how quickly we can train new models, how reliably we can run safety experiments, and how effectively we can scale Claude to millions of users - demonstrating that safe, reliable infrastructure and frontier capabilities can go hand in hand.

Developer Productivity owns the end-to-end experience of how engineers and researchers at Anthropic develop, build, test, and ship code at scale - from the source control and language ecosystems that underpin our monorepo, to the build and CI infrastructure that keeps thousands of daily builds running reliably across multiple cloud providers, to the developer acceleration tooling that deeply integrates Claude into engineering workflows.

Team Matching: Team matching is determined after the interview process based on interview performance, interests, and business priorities. Please note we may also consider you for different Infrastructure teams.ย

Responsibilities:
  • Own the technical strategy and roadmap for your area, translating team-level goals into concrete execution plans
  • Define infrastructure architecture, ensuring the hardest problems get solved - whether by you directly or by working through others
  • Design and build scalable, reliable distributed infrastructure and shared libraries that support high-volume workloads across all engineering teams
  • Own and evolve build environments, package management, and dependency systems to enable fast, reproducible builds
  • Define and implement language ecosystem standards, tooling, and frameworks that drive developer productivity across research and production workloads
You may be a good fit if you:
  • Have deep experience with build systems, CI/CD pipelines, and/or developer tooling in a large monorepo environment
  • Have strong proficiency in Python, Rust and/or Go
  • Are obsessed with developer productivity and reducing friction in the software development lifecycle
  • Have experience with container orchestration and infrastructure at scale
  • Have excellent communication skills and enjoy supporting internal partners to improve their development experience
  • Are excited about designing foundational systems and are comfortable working independently on ambiguous, high-impact technical challenges
Strong candidates may have:
  • 15+ years (not including internships or co-ops) of experience in a Software Engineer role, building and operating large-scale developer infrastructure
  • 3+ years (not including internships or co-ops) of experience leading large scale complex projects or teams as a tech lead
  • Experience with CI orchestration tools (Buildkite, Jenkins, GitHub Actions, or similar) and merge queue management at scale
  • Experience building or operating remote build execution systems (Bazel Remote Execution API, BuildBarn, BuildBuddy, or similar)
  • Experience with Nix/NixOS/Docker and managing large image / package sets at scale
  • Experience building CLI tools, developer-facing services, and GitHub API and automation workflows

Deadline to apply: None. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis.
