U.S. citizenship required

Actionable Outcomes (AO) is seeking a Database Engineer to support our operations within government-owned systems, in furtherance of our mission to fight fraud against the federal government and generally aid proper payment decisions. The relevant databases & cloud environments are owned by the United States Treasury, with data structures and ETL for which we're responsible, under contract. We require an experienced and reliable individual who can quickly familiarize themselves with these environments and assume duties related to monitoring them, improving their existing data structures & processes, and supporting their expansion and the establishment of databases in the future.

  • Fluency in SQL and especially the linguistic variants that apply to PostgreSQL and AWS Redshift.
  • Fluency with PL/pgSQL and its advanced uses such as variables, conditionals, loops, and error-handling.
  • Familiarity with the concepts of data normalization, i.e. "tidy" data.
  • Experience administering databases containing terabytes of data.
  • Familiarity with relational database table attributes such as multi-column indexes, primary & foreign keys, arbitrary constraints, sequence generation, and
  • Familiarity with SQL database user permissioning, i.e. GRANT commands, and ALTER commands as they relate to permissioning.
  • Familiarity with AWS Glue insofar as it relates to database administration, i.e. external tables, ETL jobs, and stored connections.
  • Familiarity with user-defined functions in PostgreSQL & Redshift, including those that consist of AWS Lambda functions.
  • Familiarity with noSQL databases such as AWS DynamoDB or MongoDB, and with their data-loading & querying capabilities & syntax.
  • Experience working within highly secure systems, such as government systems with FedRAMP-high ratings, or corporate systems with SOC-2

Responsibilities:

  • Take ownership of several production databases across multiple architectures, including PostgreSQL, AWS Redshift, AWS Aurora, and AWS DynamoDB.
  • Use SQL & Python to establish ETL & regular monitoring processes that ensure database integrity and accuracy, and that alert the responsible parties of any issues that arise.
  • Redesign existing production database tables & schemas, and migrate the existing data to the new structures, with no downtime.
  • Document database architectures, with an emphasis on ease & efficiency of querying, and on the explanation of the substantive meaning and correct interpretation of the datapoints.

Benefits:

  • Paid time off - 11 holidays plus vacation and sick time.
  • Health & Dental Insurance, voluntary employee-paid Vision Insurance.
  • 401k - Our 401k plan matches up to 3.5% of your income (SIMPLE IRA capped at 3%).
