Internship Remote Data Architect information

What is a remote data architect internship?

A remote data architect internship is a temporary, entry-level position where interns work virtually to assist organizations in designing and managing their data systems and infrastructure. Interns typically learn how to structure databases, optimize data flows, and ensure data security under the supervision of experienced data architects. The remote aspect allows interns to collaborate with teams and complete tasks online, often using project management and communication tools. This internship provides valuable hands-on experience for students or recent graduates interested in data architecture or related fields.

What types of projects and collaboration can a remote data architect expect during their internship?

As an Internship Remote Data Architect, you can expect to work on projects such as designing database schemas, optimizing data pipelines, and assisting in cloud migration or integration tasks. You’ll typically collaborate with data engineers, analysts, and software developers, often participating in virtual meetings and code reviews to ensure seamless data flow and best practices. This role offers exposure to real-world data architecture challenges and the opportunity to contribute to foundational technical decisions, making it ideal for growing your practical experience in distributed, remote teams.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote data architect, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Internship Remote Data Architect, you need a solid understanding of data modeling, database design, and foundational knowledge in programming languages like SQL and Python, typically supported by coursework in computer science or information systems. Familiarity with cloud platforms (such as AWS or Azure), database management systems, and data integration tools is valuable, and some internships may prefer candidates pursuing relevant certifications. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving, and effective virtual communication skills help set you apart in collaborating with distributed teams. These abilities are crucial for designing scalable data solutions and ensuring seamless teamwork in a remote environment.

The Opportunity:
For an organization to transform in today's digital world, it needs to properly collect, store, and organize its data. Effective data management can enable more efficient operations, yielding more growth. As a data architect, you know how to apply your creative-thinking and analytical mindset to help organizations manage their data assets. We're looking for a data architecture lead like you to solve complex challenges and deliver leading-edge solutions for the Army.
As a data architect on our Army Data Engineering team, you'll use your extensive technical expertise to lead the design of data architecture solutions for integrating data pipelines from numerous Army intelligence sources. You'll resolve complex data architecture-related issues in collaboration with business analysts and technology teams by analyzing data models and tools to provide a comprehensive view of available intelligence.
In this role, you'll share your technical expertise, introduce best practices, recommend, and use advanced tools for data warehousing, ETL processes, SQL, SSIS, and OLAP (Online Analytical Processing). You'll lead your team as it designs, defines, develops, and tests cloud solution components, and you'll serve as a liaison between clients and developers to ensure that requirements are met and solutions are delivered.
With your motivation to establish processes and facilitate technological innovation, you'll make a lasting impact on how the Army takes advantage of its intelligence sources.
Join us. The world can't wait.
You Have:
  • 8+ years of experience in data architecture, data engineering, or analytics engineering, including ownership of enterprise or program-level data models for secure DoW information management systems
  • 8+ years of experience with SQL and database, including data modeling, such as dimensional modeling, normalization, or schema design, query optimization, and working with relational databases and cloud data platforms
  • Experience with Python data frameworks for data processing, transformation, and automation
  • Experience designing and governing data architectures in AWS-based environments
  • Experience assisting with establishing and enforcing data governance practices, data quality frameworks, metadata management, data cataloging, lineage, and access policies
  • Experience with ETL and ELT processes and modern data pipeline architectures
  • Experience with project management, including planning and delivering schedule-bound technical engagements or assessments against a statement of work or charter and shape a practical architecture and roadmap
  • TS/SCI clearance
  • Bachelor's degree in a Data or IT field
  • Ability to obtain a DoD 8570 or 8140 IAT Level II Certification within 30 days of hire date

Nice If You Have:
  • Experience with AWS data services such as S3, Glue, Redshift, Athena, or Lake Formation
  • Experience conducting data maturity, readiness, or current-state architecture assessments for external clients
  • Experience with data governance and catalog tooling, including data catalogs, lineage tools, or metadata management platforms
  • Experience with data warehouse or Lakehouse architectures and orchestration or transformation frameworks such as Airflow or Data Build Tools (DBT)
  • Experience mentoring engineers or analysts on data modeling and governance practices
  • Experience with Agile development techniques and ceremonies
  • Experience with the Atlassian tool suite, including Jira and Confluence
  • Knowledge of AI/ML workflows and the data architecture patterns that support them
  • Possession of strong client-facing communication skills, to engage new customers, present findings, and recommendations to senior technical and non-technical stakeholders, and coordinate across internal teams
  • Master's degree in a Data or IT field

Clearance:
