Both roles require similar educational backgrounds and are often remote, but the Data Engineer position tends to be more technical and operational.

What is a remote data architect internship?

A remote data architect internship is a temporary, entry-level position where interns work virtually to assist organizations in designing and managing their data systems and infrastructure. Interns typically learn how to structure databases, optimize data flows, and ensure data security under the supervision of experienced data architects. The remote aspect allows interns to collaborate with teams and complete tasks online, often using project management and communication tools. This internship provides valuable hands-on experience for students or recent graduates interested in data architecture or related fields.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote data architect, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Internship Remote Data Architect, you need a solid understanding of data modeling, database design, and foundational knowledge in programming languages like SQL and Python, typically supported by coursework in computer science or information systems. Familiarity with cloud platforms (such as AWS or Azure), database management systems, and data integration tools is valuable, and some internships may prefer candidates pursuing relevant certifications. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving, and effective virtual communication skills help set you apart in collaborating with distributed teams. These abilities are crucial for designing scalable data solutions and ensuring seamless teamwork in a remote environment.

Your primary focus will be formulating and executing comprehensive data migration strategies. You will be responsible for building a detailed understanding of legacy data structures, locations, and edge cases, creating data dictionaries, and developing the source-to-destination mapping and transformations necessary to migrate data to modernized systems. You will also engage with downstream data consumers to ensure that migrations effectively address stakeholder needs.

  • Strategically plan new designs for database structure integrations, using knowledge of system interfaces to ensure effective integration and optimal performance.
  • Analyze methods for transforming existing data into new environment formats and loading it into other database structures.
  • Provide recommendations for environment disaster recovery plans and migration tools.
  • Manage source-to-target data mapping between different data models.
  • Assist in planning, designing, and managing data migration processes between cloud environments.
  • Work closely with the project manager and development lead to identify resources and integrate the data migration plan into the project schedule.
  • Develop best practices and standards for risk management, scheduling, and data-related requirements gathering.
  • Perform migration and testing of transactional data from legacy systems to modernized systems.
  • Perform migration of users from source to destination systems and coordinate with customers on post-migration issues.
  • Define test cases and quality control mechanisms to ensure data is migrated correctly, at the right time, and in suitable volumes for each project phase.
  • Perform post-migration quality assurance, audits, reconciliation, and exception reporting.
  • Review existing migration tools and recommend performance improvements for the migration process.
  • Identify migration risks and proactively communicate them to the project manager and technical lead.
  • Work with management to continually improve team workflows and processes.

What you will bring:
  • Education & Experience: Bachelor's degree required along with 6 years of experience in data migration.

Technical Skills:
  • Hands-on data migration experience using various methods and tools.
  • SQL experience creating and maintaining queries, views, and stored procedures in a multi-database environment.
  • Experience with relational databases, data analysis, and data conversions.
  • Problem Solving: Ability to evaluate data integrity, recommend solutions, and develop methods to systematically eliminate data incompatibilities across systems.
  • Troubleshooting: Ability to effectively diagnose, isolate, and expediently resolve
  • complex data infrastructure problems and monitor project development.
  • Consulting: Experience in consulting and active involvement with data-related projects.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with Microsoft SQL Server, MySQL, and MariaDB.
  • Experience with database replication technologies.
