Job description

Overview:
The University of Virginia's media relations team, which is part of Office of University Communications, is looking to hire a thoughtful, detail-oriented student colleague, who will lead the production cycle of our twice-weekly media newsletter, which reaches thousands of journalists.
This opportunity sits at the intersection of legacy media and emerging media, offering direct experience into the constantly evolving nature of university media relations in the digital era. This position will own the creation and execution of the newsletter, including helping the media relations team to refine its design and delivery. Beyond publishing each edition, this role will support strategic email list management and subscriber development. In totality, those responsibilities and opportunities offer a student internship role with nearly limitless potential.
This position is great for someone who enjoys refining processes over time and delivering work on a consistent cadence. While an interest in journalism and media is valuable, this position is best suited to candidates with a passion in high-quality execution, the strategic aspects of email communications, audience growth, and understanding how digital content reaches and engages with varying audiences.
You will be joining a small but determined Earned Media Team, where our mission is harnessing strategic media coverage to benefit the public and elevate the standing of world-class UVA experts. Our work directly supports UVA's role as a public institution that serves all citizens of Virginia.
The starting date and weekly schedule are both highly flexible. In addition, the location of the work is highly flexible, hybrid in nature, and adaptable to student schedules. Optimal combination of remote-work arrangements and a vibrant, engaging office setting.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Produce and distribute the twice-weekly UVA Media Advisory newsletter, including drafting, editing, formatting, and quality assurance.

  • Maintain and improve the health of our media contact listserv by researching, adding, organizing, and removing contacts as needed.

  • Monitor engagement trends and recommend ideas to improve newsletter performance and user experience.

  • Brainstorm and test creative ways to make content easier for journalists to scan, discover relevant stories, and connect with our team for interview opportunities.

  • Work across a broad array of UVA experts and topic areas.

  • While not a responsibility, this role carries the opportunity to contribute to University Communications' broader overall strategy and content.

Qualifications:
  • Currently enrolled as a full-time student at the University of Virginia.

  • Passionate long-term interest in the mission of public universities and how that mission intersects with public relations, digital marketing, communications, and the role of journalism in our society's health and vibrance.

  • Demonstrated track record of drawing energy from the work of regular production cycles.

  • Basic proficiency or ability to learn email marketing software (Marketing Cloud, MailChimp, etc.)

  • Committed collaborator who gravitates toward team settings.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with email marketing platforms (Marketing Cloud, Mailchimp, etc.)

  • Experience creating newsletters, editorial content, or strategic messaging for varying audiences.

  • Interest in journalism, media relations, and academic research.

Scheduling: Digital marketing intern expected to work approximately 20 hours per week.
Compensation: $20/hr.
To Apply:
Please submit a resume and a brief cover letter outlining your interest in the position. Please limit the cover letter to 400 words. This application will remain open until we find our next teammate.
