Internship Relay Protection Engineer information

What does an internship relay protection engineer do?

An Internship Relay Protection Engineer assists in the design, testing, and maintenance of protective relay systems used in electrical power grids. Their work helps ensure the safety and reliability of power systems by preventing damage from faults or abnormal operating conditions. Interns may help with field testing, data analysis, and documentation under the supervision of experienced engineers. This role provides hands-on experience with protective devices and exposure to industry standards and practices.

What are some typical projects or tasks that an internship relay protection engineer might work on during their internship?

As an Internship Relay Protection Engineer, you can expect to assist with tasks such as reviewing relay settings, supporting testing and commissioning activities, and helping to analyze system protection schemes. Interns often work under the supervision of experienced engineers and collaborate with both design and field teams to ensure proper operation of protection systems. These experiences provide valuable hands-on learning and insight into how relay protection maintains the reliability and safety of power systems, which can lay a strong foundation for future career growth in power systems engineering.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an internship relay protection engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Internship Relay Protection Engineer, you need a solid understanding of electrical engineering fundamentals, especially power systems and protection principles, typically supported by progressing toward a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with power system analysis software (such as ETAP or PSCAD), relay testing equipment, and exposure to industry standards like IEEE or IEC is highly beneficial. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help interns excel in team collaboration and technical documentation. These skills and qualities are crucial for ensuring the reliability and safety of electrical grids while supporting learning and development in a real-world engineering environment.

What is the difference between Internship Relay Protection Engineer vs Relay Protection Engineer?

Job description

Since 1996, RQ Construction, LLC. has been a leading player in Southern California's robust commercial and governmental Design-Build economy. We now have a national presence with current projects approaching $300M, spanning coast to coast, including Puerto Rico.

Our mission is "to provide our customers the best built environment while being the first choice of all stakeholders." Headquartered on the West Coast in Carlsbad, CA, we are a full-service Design-Build company. We offer management of projects throughout the United States, Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and Puerto Rico, with our field operations' team members who work on location for each of our projects. We specialize in fast-track projects in new commercial construction for both public and private clients, with a primary focus in the Department of Defense market.

We are looking for an Internship candidate to join our Operations team on current projects in Puerto Rico. These opportunities will expose interns to entry-level management within the organization. Our assignments vary from field project operations to office support. Project assignments will require working on an active military base. Interns will be exposed to project management and field operations experiences that will help individuals see a possible future career within the field of construction. All work is performed on-site, whether on the jobsite or in the assigned office. Applicants must be pursuing their Mechanical Engineering Degrees.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

  • A High School Diploma (or GED equivalent) is the minimum education required for this position, though candidates enrolled in a Bachelor's Program (Construction Management, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Business) will be given priority. A combination of equivalent work experience and training in the field may be qualifying.
  • Computer literacy (Microsoft Office, Internet, etc.) required.
  • Prior work experience within the construction industry strongly desired but not required.

We are an equal opportunity employer and all qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, creed, gender (including gender identity and gender expression), religion (all aspects of religious beliefs, observance or practice, including religious dress or grooming practices) marital status, registered domestic partner status, age, national origin or ancestry, physical or mental disability, medical condition (including cancer or a record or history of cancer, and genetic characteristics), sex (including pregnancy, childbirth, breastfeeding or related medical condition), genetic information, sexual orientation, veteran status, or any other basis or status protected by federal, state, or local law or ordinance or regulation.

All candidates considered for hire must provide evidence of identity and U.S. work authorization at the time of hire. Additionally, all candidates must successfully pass a drug screening and commercial criminal background check, including a stricter Department of Defense background check, for access to job site at military base (if applicable for position being hired for).
