Job Overview

The Lead Data Scientist advances Macy’s enterprise data science strategy by leading complex initiatives that transform customer experience and business performance. This role manages group work, mentors data scientists, and partners with senior stakeholders to embed AI-driven solutions into critical workflows. By ensuring scalability and proof of value (POV), the Lead Data Scientist accelerates innovation and delivers measurable outcomes across the organization. 

What You Will Do

  • Lead the design and deployment of advanced data science and AI models for enterprise use cases that solve complex business challenges and influence strategic decisions. 

  • Guide teams in applying Generative AI and Large Language Models (LLMs) to create intelligent, customer-centric solutions. 

  • Oversee hypothesis generation, data requirements, and model development to ensure alignment with business priorities. 

  • Evaluate proof of value (POV) for data science initiatives, determining scalability and pivoting strategies when needed. 

  • Partner with senior stakeholders to translate analytics into actionable strategies that drive retail innovation. 

  • Collaborate with Data Engineering and Architecture teams to implement robust, scalable data pipelines and enterprise data assets. 

  • Ensure responsible AI practices, including governance frameworks and bias mitigation, in all deployed solutions. 

  • Mentor and develop data scientists, fostering a culture of collaboration, technical excellence, and continuous learning. 

  • Communicate insights through compelling visualizations and clear storytelling to influence decisions. 

  • Stay ahead of emerging data science and AI trends to enhance Macy’s capabilities and competitive advantage. 

Skills You Will Need

  • Technical Acumen: Proficient in Python, R, SQL, and cloud platforms such as Google Cloud Platform; experienced with big data tools (Spark, Hadoop) and visualization tools (Tableau, Power BI); understands machine learning concepts and generative AI applications. 
  • Stakeholder Management: Builds strong partnerships with business leaders to embed data science into decision-making processes and ensure adoption of solutions. 
  • Communication: Delivers clear, compelling insights through written, verbal, and visual storytelling to diverse audiences. 

Who You Are

  • Brings 5+ years of experience applying data science in business environments, including experience leading group work and mentoring others; advanced degree preferred. 

  • Demonstrates fluency in advanced algorithms, statistical methods, and AI techniques. 

  • Experienced in regression, clustering, time-series analysis, and machine learning. 

  • Comfortable influencing senior stakeholders and managing priorities in fast-paced environments. 

  • Regularly required to sit, talk, hear; use hands/fingers to touch, handle, and feel. Occasionally required to move about the workplace and reach with hands and arms. Requires close vision.
