Position Summary

The Systems Security Engineer I will support the design, implementation, testing, and maintenance of cybersecurity controls for embedded computing platforms, communication systems, and autonomous maritime vehicle networks. This role works closely with communications, software, and electrical engineering teams to integrate secure system architectures throughout the development lifecycle.

The Systems Security Engineer will assist with securing Linux-based embedded systems, network infrastructure, remote access solutions, and communication technologies while helping ensure compliance with industry and government cybersecurity standards.

This position is suited for a motivated engineer who enjoys hands‑on technical work, problem solving, and learning secure system design within autonomous and defense‑oriented environments.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Responsible for development of cybersecurity documentation, security procedures, risk assessments, and system configuration records.
  • Assist with securing embedded Linux systems, network infrastructure, and communication equipment used on autonomous vehicle platforms.
  • Support implementation of cybersecurity controls including authentication, access control, encryption, logging, and secure remote access.
  • Configure and maintain firewalls, VPNs, user permissions, SSH, certificates, and other security technologies.
  • Support implementation of secure network architectures including segmentation, VLANs, and defense-in-depth principles.
  • Assist with deployment and maintenance of endpoint protection, audit logging, and system monitoring capabilities.
  • Participate in laboratory testing, cybersecurity validation, and operational field demonstrations.
Required Qualifications
  • BS in Cybersecurity, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Information Technology, or equivalent experience (3-5 years).
  • Internship, laboratory, technical project, or professional experience involving Linux systems, networking, embedded systems, or cybersecurity.
  • Basic understanding of cybersecurity principles including authentication, encryption, least privilege, defense-in-depth, and secure system design.
  • Familiarity with Linux operating systems and command-line environments.
  • Understanding of TCP/IP networking fundamentals including switching, routing, subnets, and VLANs.
  • Familiarity with SSH, VPNs, firewalls, certificates, and secure remote access technologies.
  • Experience using basic network troubleshooting and diagnostic tools.
  • Comfortable working in laboratory and field environments.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience administering Linux-based embedded systems.
  • Familiarity with NVIDIA Jetson, Raspberry Pi, or similar embedded computing platforms.
  • Knowledge of PKI, certificate management, and cryptographic technologies.
  • Understanding of NIST Cybersecurity Framework, NIST SP 800-171, CMMC, CIS Benchmarks, or STIGs.
  • Relevant certifications such as CompTIA Security+, Network+, Cisco CCNA, or ISC2 Certified in Cybersecurity (CC).
  • Familiarity with autonomous systems, robotics, maritime systems, industrial control systems, or defense applications.
  • Comfortable with Python, Bash, or PowerShell scripting.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
  • Must be able to walk, stand, and navigate large indoor and outdoor facilities for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to lift, carry, and move materials and equipment weighing up to 25 lbs on a regular basis.
  • Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) may be required in designated areas or when performing specific tasks, in accordance with safety protocols and company policy.
  • May be required to climb ladders, stoop, kneel, or crouch during inspections, maintenance walk‑throughs, or emergency response situations.
  • Regular exposure to facility operations including noise, dust, temperature fluctuations, and industrial equipment.
  • Occasional off‑hours or weekend work required for emergency facility responses or projects as needed
  • Requires frequent use of a computer and other standard office equipment for documentation, communication, and coordination tasks.
