What is an internship in programmable logic controller (PLC)?

An Internship in Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) is a temporary position designed for students or recent graduates to gain practical experience working with PLC systems used in industrial automation. Interns learn to program, troubleshoot, and maintain PLCs, often assisting in designing automation solutions for manufacturing or process industries. This hands-on experience helps them understand real-world applications of PLCs, work with industry-standard hardware and software, and develop valuable technical and problem-solving skills for a career in automation or controls engineering.

What types of projects or tasks can an intern expect to work on during a programmable logic controller (PLC) internship?

During a PLC internship, interns typically assist with designing, programming, and testing automation systems that use PLCs in industrial settings. You may be involved in writing and troubleshooting ladder logic, configuring hardware, and supporting senior engineers during equipment installation or upgrades. Interns often participate in hands-on tasks such as wiring control panels, running simulations, and documenting system changes. This role also offers opportunities to collaborate closely with engineers, electricians, and technicians, giving you practical exposure to real-world automation challenges.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an internship programmable logic controller (PLC) specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as an intern specializing in Programmable Logic Controllers, you generally need a background in electrical engineering or automation, along with foundational knowledge of PLC programming concepts. Familiarity with industry-standard PLC platforms (such as Siemens or Allen-Bradley), ladder logic, and simulation software is typically expected. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and a willingness to learn are crucial soft skills in this role. These competencies ensure you can effectively support automation projects, troubleshoot issues, and contribute to reliable industrial system operations.

What is the difference between Internship Programmable Logic Controller vs Electrical Engineering Intern?

Job description

The AWS Hardware Engineering team creates server designs for Amazon's innovative cloud services. Our designs are industry-leading in frugality and operational excellence, and are critical to the success of the AWS business and millions of customers who use AWS today. Our engineers solve challenging technology problems, and build architecturally sound, high-quality components to enable AWS to realize critical business strategies.
The ideal candidate for this role will be a curious, innovative self-starter. You will be an experienced Firmware/Software Development Engineer specialized in programmable logic development with excellent hardware description language skills, knowledge in digital hardware and embedded firmware, and eager to expand your knowledge and skills. You will use broad knowledge of the system in your projects to find the best solutions to difficult problems. You will work with engineers across the company as well as external companies and lead development efforts to and beyond delivery. You will collaborate with internal and external development engineers (software, hardware, validation, software services). AWS Engineers are shaping the way people use computers and designing the future of cloud computing technology - come help us make history!
AWS Infrastructure Services owns the design, planning, delivery, and operation of all AWS global infrastructure. In other words, we're the people who keep the cloud running. We support all AWS data centers and all of the servers, storage, networking, power, and cooling equipment that ensure our customers have continual access to the innovation they rely on. We work on the most challenging problems, with thousands of variables impacting the supply chain - and we're looking for talented people who want to help.
You'll join a diverse team of software, hardware, and network engineers, supply chain specialists, security experts, operations managers, and other vital roles.
