What is an internship in programmable logic controller (PLC)?

An Internship in Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) is a temporary position designed for students or recent graduates to gain practical experience working with PLC systems used in industrial automation. Interns learn to program, troubleshoot, and maintain PLCs, often assisting in designing automation solutions for manufacturing or process industries. This hands-on experience helps them understand real-world applications of PLCs, work with industry-standard hardware and software, and develop valuable technical and problem-solving skills for a career in automation or controls engineering.

What types of projects or tasks can an intern expect to work on during a programmable logic controller (PLC) internship?

During a PLC internship, interns typically assist with designing, programming, and testing automation systems that use PLCs in industrial settings. You may be involved in writing and troubleshooting ladder logic, configuring hardware, and supporting senior engineers during equipment installation or upgrades. Interns often participate in hands-on tasks such as wiring control panels, running simulations, and documenting system changes. This role also offers opportunities to collaborate closely with engineers, electricians, and technicians, giving you practical exposure to real-world automation challenges.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an internship programmable logic controller (PLC) specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as an intern specializing in Programmable Logic Controllers, you generally need a background in electrical engineering or automation, along with foundational knowledge of PLC programming concepts. Familiarity with industry-standard PLC platforms (such as Siemens or Allen-Bradley), ladder logic, and simulation software is typically expected. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and a willingness to learn are crucial soft skills in this role. These competencies ensure you can effectively support automation projects, troubleshoot issues, and contribute to reliable industrial system operations.

What is the difference between Internship Programmable Logic Controller vs Electrical Engineering Intern?

This position is ideal for a mechanically strong, self-motivated technician who can troubleshoot equipment independently. The facility relies heavily on pumps, motors, valves, piping systems, and process equipment rather than traditional conveyor or packaging equipment.

The Industrial Maintenance Technician will perform preventive, corrective, and emergency maintenance to improve equipment reliability, minimize downtime, and support safe and efficient production operations.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Troubleshoot and repair industrial production equipment and facility systems
• Diagnose mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic equipment problems
• Maintain and repair pumps, motors, valves, piping, and process equipment
• Respond quickly to equipment breakdowns to minimize production downtime
• Perform scheduled preventive and corrective maintenance
• Inspect motors, bearings, couplings, seals, and other rotating equipment
• Use electrical meters and diagnostic tools to identify equipment failures
• Read electrical schematics, mechanical drawings, technical manuals, and blueprints
• Complete work orders and accurately document maintenance activities in the CMMS
• Assist with equipment installations, upgrades, modifications, and improvement projects
• Participate in root cause analysis for recurring equipment failures
• Maintain tools, parts, and work areas in a clean, safe, and organized condition
• Follow OSHA, food safety, sanitation, and plant safety procedures

QUALIFICATIONS

• High school diploma or GED required
• At least two years of industrial or manufacturing maintenance experience preferred
• Strong mechanical troubleshooting and repair skills
• Experience maintaining industrial pumps and electric motors
• Basic knowledge of electrical systems, motor controls, and control panels
• Ability to troubleshoot equipment independently and determine the cause of failures
• Working knowledge of preventive maintenance practices
• Ability to read schematics, blueprints, and technical manuals
• Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team
• Comfortable working in a food manufacturing or regulated production environment
• Ability to perform physically demanding work and lift equipment as required
• Willingness to work either 2nd or 3rd shift

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE

• Electrical troubleshooting
• Three-phase motors and motor controls
• Variable frequency drives, or VFDs
• Programmable logic controllers, or PLCs
• Pneumatic and hydraulic systems
• Pumps, valves, seals, bearings, and rotating equipment
