Internship Power Engineer information

What does an internship power engineer do?

An Internship Power Engineer assists in designing, analyzing, and maintaining electrical power systems under the supervision of experienced engineers. Their tasks may include supporting project development, performing calculations, helping with system modeling, conducting site visits, and preparing technical documentation. The internship provides hands-on experience in the energy sector, allowing interns to apply theoretical knowledge and learn industry practices. This role is typically aimed at students or recent graduates pursuing a degree in electrical or power engineering.

Is there a demand for internship power engineers?

Internship power engineers are in demand as the energy sector continues to grow, especially with increasing focus on renewable energy and grid modernization. Companies seek interns with knowledge of electrical systems, control systems, and relevant certifications, making these internships valuable for gaining industry experience and skills.

Can you intern at a nuclear power plant?

Internships for power engineers at nuclear power plants are typically available to students pursuing degrees in electrical, mechanical, or nuclear engineering. These internships often require safety training, security clearances, and adherence to strict safety protocols due to the sensitive and hazardous environment. Candidates should have relevant coursework and may need to obtain certifications such as radiation safety training.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an internship power engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Internship Power Engineer, you need a solid understanding of electrical engineering fundamentals, coursework in power systems, and enrollment in or completion of a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with industry-standard software such as MATLAB, ETAP, or AutoCAD and basic knowledge of safety standards are commonly expected. Strong analytical thinking, teamwork, and effective communication skills help interns contribute to projects and collaborate with senior engineers. These competencies ensure interns can learn quickly, support engineering tasks safely, and add value to power engineering teams.

What types of projects or tasks can an internship power engineer expect to work on during their placement?

As an Internship Power Engineer, you can expect to be involved in a variety of hands-on and analytical tasks, such as designing electrical systems, performing load calculations, assisting with power distribution studies, and supporting senior engineers on site visits. Interns often contribute to drafting technical reports, reviewing schematic diagrams, and participating in team meetings to discuss ongoing projects. This role offers valuable exposure to real-world engineering challenges and provides opportunities to collaborate closely with both peers and experienced professionals, helping you build practical skills and industry knowledge.

What is the difference between Internship Power Engineer vs Power Engineer?

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • GPA of 3.5 or above
  • 9+ months experience of application of technical skills outside of the classroom (examples: laboratory, research, extracurricular project teams, volunteering, personal projects or prior internship/work experience)
  • Ability to work well in an integrated collaborative team environment, including frequent interactions with technicians, other engineers, and managers
  • Ability to work effectively in a dynamic professional setting with changing needs and requirements

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Able to work full time, onsite for a minimum of 12 consecutive weeks beginning in May or June 2027
  • Able to provide own transportation for positions at Brownsville, Cape Canaveral, McGregor and Vandenberg locations

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:

Pay range:

Graduate Engineer/Completed Bachelor's: $83,200.00/per year Graduate Engineer/Completed Master's: $91,000.00/per year Graduate Engineer/Completed PhD: $100,100.00/per year

PROGRAM DESCRIPTIONS:

VEHICLE

  • DRAGON : The Dragon spacecraft is capable of carrying up to 7 passengers to and from Earth orbit, and beyond. It is the only spacecraft currently flying that is capable of returning significant amounts of cargo to Earth and is the first private spacecraft to take humans to the space station.
  • FALCON : The Falcon program tackles space exploration's toughest problems through the ongoing development of our reusable launch vehicles, Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy. These vehicles are currently responsible for delivering commercial, national security, and NASA satellites into orbit, as well as supply critical science, supplies, and crew to the International Space Station.
  • STARSHIP: The Starship spacecraft and Super Heavy rocket - collectively referred to as Starship - represent a fully reusable transportation system designed to carry both crew and cargo to Earth orbit, the Moon, Mars and beyond. Starship is the world's most powerful launch vehicle ever developed, designed to carry more than 100 metric tonnes to orbit in a fully reusable configuration and powered by our Raptor and Raptor Vacuum (RVac) engines, which are designed for use in the vacuum of space.
