What is an internship perception engineer?

An Internship Perception Engineer is a student or recent graduate who works on developing and improving perception systems, often within the fields of robotics, autonomous vehicles, or computer vision. Their responsibilities typically include processing sensor data (like cameras, LiDAR, or radar), developing algorithms for object detection and tracking, and contributing to machine learning models that help machines understand their environment. These internships offer hands-on experience with cutting-edge technologies and exposure to real-world engineering challenges. Interns usually work under the guidance of experienced engineers and may collaborate with teams across hardware, software, and research.

What types of projects does an internship perception engineer typically work on, and how do these contribute to the overall goals of the engineering team?

Internship Perception Engineers usually work on projects involving data collection, algorithm development, and sensor integration to help machines interpret their environments. These projects can include tasks like annotating sensor data, testing perception models (such as object detection or tracking), or supporting the deployment of perception systems in real-world scenarios. By contributing to these projects, interns help the team improve the accuracy and reliability of perception solutions, which are essential for applications like autonomous vehicles or robotics. Interns often collaborate closely with senior engineers and cross-functional teams, gaining hands-on experience and exposure to state-of-the-art technologies.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an internship perception engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Internship Perception Engineer, you need a solid background in computer vision, machine learning, and programming languages such as Python or C++, often supported by coursework in robotics or artificial intelligence. Familiarity with tools like ROS, OpenCV, TensorFlow, and experience working with sensor data (e.g., LiDAR, cameras) are typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, teamwork, and effective communication set top candidates apart in collaborative, research-driven environments. These skills are crucial for developing and integrating advanced perception algorithms that enable autonomous systems to interpret and interact with their surroundings.

What is the difference between Internship Perception Engineer vs Perception Engineer?

Job description

We are seeking a Senior Software Development Engineer to build and scale the software systems that power perception and state estimation on our intelligent robots. In this role, you will design, implement, and maintain production-quality software that enables robots to understand their position and motion in real time, even in challenging and dynamic environments.
You will own the full software lifecycle-from architecture and design through implementation, testing, and deployment-ensuring that perception systems are reliable, performant, and maintainable at scale. You will build robust infrastructure for sensor data processing, algorithm integration, and embedded deployment pipelines, while collaborating closely with applied scientists and hardware engineers to bring cutting-edge research into production.
This is a deeply hands-on engineering role. You will write high-quality, well-tested code, design scalable systems, and drive operational excellence across the perception software stack. The ideal candidate has strong software engineering fundamentals, experience building real-time systems, and a passion for robotics.
Key job responsibilities
- Design and implement production software systems for real-time perception and state estimation on robotic platforms like Sprout
- Build scalable data pipelines for processing, calibrating, and managing multi-sensor data (cameras, IMUs, and other sensing modalities)
- Develop and maintain deployment infrastructure for embedded hardware (e.g., ARM, GPU-accelerated edge devices), including CI/CD pipelines, OTA updates, and monitoring
- Architect software interfaces between perception, controls, and navigation subsystems within the robot's autonomy stack
- Optimize system performance under strict latency, memory, and power constraints through profiling, benchmarking, and iterative improvement
- Build and maintain testing frameworks, simulation environments, and evaluation infrastructure for perception systems
- Drive operational excellence including alarming, metrics, runbooks, and on-call support for production robotics systems
- Collaborate with applied scientists to translate research prototypes into production-ready, maintainable code
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- 5+ years of non-internship professional software development experience
- 5+ years of programming with at least one software programming language experience
- 5+ years of leading design or architecture (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience
- Experience as a mentor, tech lead or leading an engineering team
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- 5+ years of full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations experience
- Bachelor's degree in computer science or equivalent
